‘Love happens because of four things’: Actress Jyothika on how Suriya treats her as an equal in marriage

Suriya and Jyothika are one of the power couples in the film industry. The duo, who got married on September 11, 2006, in Chennai, never shy away from speaking fondly about their relationship. This time was no exception. Jyothika, in a recent interview, shared her candid thoughts on marriage and how Suriya treats her as an equal in the partnership. The 47-year-old further talked about 4 factors that contribute to a long-lasting relationship.

Jyothika, in a conversation with Galatta India, revealed that respecting each other, appreciating one another, giving space and being friends with your partner are the cornerstones of a happy marriage.

‘These four factors balance everything out,’ said Jyothika, adding that, according to her, love between two people grows stronger and deeper when these elements are given attention.


Speaking about her husband Suriya, Jyothika noted that her relationship with Jyothika is built on appreciation and respect. The actress added that typically almost 80 per cent of women give love and respect but when the same respect comes from a man, ‘it means a lot to a woman’.

Jyothika, who took a short hiatus from acting after tying the knot with Suriya, returned to the big screen 7 years later. As per the actress, Suriya was completely supportive of the move. She shared that she started working and stopped when she wanted to before moving to Mumbai to stay with her kids.

Jyothika continued that Suriya has been supportive of her whole journey and treats her as an equal. ‘It is not professional, and it is not when you are alpha in your own strata; it is more to do with appreciation, respect and space,’ she said, adding that this understanding goes a long way.

Suriya and Jyothika are proud parents to two children – daughter Diya and son Dev. The couple recently renewed their marriage vows in Scotland.
