AirTag needs a Bluetooth signal. The signal taps into billions of Bluetooth enabled Apple devices around the world.
Two weeks ago, Apple Inc launched its smallest — and most affordable — product. The AirTag is a small, metal tracking device that helps in locating lost items such as backpacks, keys and wallets. It is priced at Rs 3,190 and will be available in India from April 30.
How does an AirTag work? AirTag needs a Bluetooth signal. The signal taps into billions of Bluetoothenabled Apple devices around the world. If you have attached the AirTag to your wallet and have misplaced it, you will be notified when an iPhone or MacBook comes within range. It also sends a custom message and phone number to the person who finds the wallet, provided you reported the item lost and entered a phone number.
What devices work best with an AirTag? An iPhone 11 series or iPhone 12 series, as they have the U1 chip with Ultrawide Band technology. It does work with other iPhones, but the tracking isn’t precise. Android users can also use it as AirTag supports NFC (Near Field Communication).
Do you need a separate app for AirTag? No, you only need the Find My App that is pre-loaded on iPhones. One can use the app to check any AirTagged item’s current location or even its last known location. The Find My App will play a sound from the AirTag as soon as the lost item comes within Bluetooth range.

Who should buy the AirTag? If you are deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and have a habit of losing things — bags, keys, wallets — the AirTag is a nifty gadget to have. Of course, it won’t prevent theft as anyone can easily remove its battery and make it redundant. AirTag comes with a CR2032 battery — colloquially known as a ‘button cell’ — and Apple claims it lasts one year. The battery can be replaced for about Rs 50.
