The Indian cricket board frowns upon loose tongues. So it is not surprising that Diana Edulji is usually tightlipped. After all, she’s a member of the board’s Committee of Administrators. But on radio, the former Indian women’s cricket captain opens up into an engaging storyteller.

During the World Cup, Edulji has been appearing on a radio show, sharing her experiences of playing and travelling in the '70s and '80s. “We were touring New Zealand and were put up in homes of Indian families,” Edulji said recently. “In the evening, our host asked us if we wanted tea. A couple of hours later, it was dinner time. By now we were hungry. But nobody asked us for dinner. Mustering courage, we asked our hosts. They said they had asked us for tea, and we had said no. We realised then that in New Zealand, evening ‘tea’ meant dinner. After that, we never turned down another offer of tea.”

“The sights of the Dartmoor area in Cornwall, England or the mountain waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland or the pristine Perth beaches in Australia are the destinations that I love to visit time and again.

In India, my favourite holiday remains staying at a high quality house boat in Nagin Lake at Kashmir— It’s like nothing I have experienced anywhere in the world.”
