Some foods simply touch your soul, lingering in your taste buds long after you have taken the first bite. Idlis are one such delight. Soft, fluffy, and comforting, this South Indian breakfast staple is the kind of food you can never get tired of. Whether paired with hot sambar or a variety of chutneys, every mouthful feels light yet satisfying. Their simplicity is what makes them truly special. Easy on the stomach and full of warmth, idlis are not just a meal but an experience that brings both comfort and joy.

London vlogger’s idli preparation

So, it was no wonder that UK-based food vlogger and content creator Julius Fiedler attempted to make idlis at home after learning the recipe from his visit to Bengaluru. He recently posted a video on Instagram, showcasing the preparation process of the tasty, healthy and melt-in-the-mouth delicacy.

Julius Fiedler began his cooking procedure by fermenting a batter of rice and lentils. He recommended soaking both ingredients separately for a few hours to achieve the perfect texture. The rice is then blended with some of the soaking liquid into a coarse batter, while the urad dal is ground until smooth enough that it floats in some water. After that, he combined the batter and mixed it by hand, kickstarting the fermentation process.

Food enthusiasts love vlogger’s idlis

In the following step, the culinary expert left the batter in a warm place until it increased in volume and looked aerated, before finally sprinkling a dash of salt. To get the right oval shape of idlis, they were traditionally added to an idli maker and steamed over simmering water until they reached cloud-like perfection. Julius Fiedler said that in case you do not have an idli maker, you can also fry them in a pan over medium flame.

As per Julius Fiedler, the fermentation breaks down the carbohydrates and increases the available amino acids for a healthy staple. The video ended with the influencer arranging the warm idlis in a traditional banana leaf and pairing them with refreshing dollops of coconut chutney. Needless to mention, foodies were left drooling by the preparation. While one user called the idlis ‘unreal’, another found them to be wonderful. Meanwhile, someone else requested Julius Fiedler to make podi idlis the next time.
