Annanya Agarwal, CEO, Runaya Refining, and President of Vedanta Sports says the lockdown has forced him to go from playing sports four times a week to working out on Zoom with his friends.

Body
“Before the lockdown, almost all my physical exercise came through sports. I would play three to four sports — cricket, football, badminton and basketball — on a weekly basis. After the pandemic broke out, however, I was forced to work out at home without professional supervision. “In my Mumbai house, there is a small terrace where I exercise.

A few of my friends have used the lockdown as an opportunity to focus on their fitness and working with them drives me as well. I’m doing regular Zoom workouts with these friends who are motivating me to push more. These workouts are in the evenings and mainly body weight intensive.”

Diet
“I wish I was more particular about my diet. However, in the past few weeks, I’ve become more aware of portion sizes. The thing for me is to eat smartly. So I try and eat several smaller meals throughout the day. I eat everything in moderation. Unless it’s ice cream, in which case I’m finishing the tub!”

Mind
“A healthy mental routine is as important as a fitness regimen. So, after my workouts are done, I spend 20-30 minutes on the terrace just as it’s turning dark. I put on some music, clear my mind of all thoughts, and am completely by myself with that song in the moment. It’s very meditative for me.

“I have also successfully taken on some Lego projects and invested time on studying poker mechanics and strategies to help sharpen my mind.”

Soul
“Music has been a great source of positive energy for my soul in the weeks I spent at home. It’s been the ultimate solution to deal with social loneliness and cabin fever. I also find it therapeutic to watch the sunset from my balcony; it calms me a great deal. Dusk is my favourite time of the day, and Mumbai has been kind by giving us these visual treats on a daily basis.”

“I decided to use this opportunity to improve my physical conditioning. I started cycling (after more than 40 years) inside my gated community from mid-April. I went from seven kilometres per ride to 20 kilometres by the end of June. Recently, I did a 52-kilometre ride to Chikka Tirupathi [on the outskirts of Bengaluru]. Cycling has had a huge impact, not just on my physical conditioning but also my confidence.”

“Startups are quite demanding, so I’ve never been able to work out more than three days a week, even when I trained for the Ironman Triathlon. So, when the lockdown was announced, I decided to challenge myself with a ‘consistency goal’ of accomplishing a workout a day. It began with coordinated workouts on Zoom with my friends and as restrictions eased, I started going for outdoor runs. There were days when there would be so many calls that I’d be seen climbing the building stairs at 10 pm. I now have more than 100 days of workouts under my belt and it has been the biggest stressbuster.”

“During the lockdown, I have managed to master single-leg burpees. It’s important to have a defined schedule and stick to it. I ensure that I block out some time during the day for exercise. I work out at home daily with various bodyweight exercises — I do pushups, burpees and air squats. I love doing CrossFit and high-intensity interval training that combines weightlifting, aerobics, powerlifting and gymnastics.”
