Living cost in India vs USA: American mum says life in India is 10x cheaper
An American mom, Kristen Fischer, found she can live a better lifestyle in India despite earning less. She shared a breakdown of everyday expenses, revealing significant cost differences for services like haircuts, Wi-Fi, entertainment, and health...

In her video, Kristen explains that many people often ask why she prefers living in India as an American. Despite earning less here, she says she can actually afford a much better lifestyle. To prove her point, she broke down the cost of everyday essentials — and the difference is striking. For starters, a standard haircut in the US costs anywhere between $15 (Rs 1319 approx) and $50 (Rs 4397 approx), while in India it’s just $1.20 (Rs 105) to $2.50 (Rs 219) — nearly 20 times cheaper.
Wi-Fi bills show a similar gap. In the US, an average internet plan costs around $80 (Rs 7,000 approx) a month, whereas in India it’s about $8 (Rs 703), making it ten times cheaper. The same goes for entertainment. Movie tickets in the US usually range from $12 to $16 (Rs 1,055 to Rs 1,407), but in India, they cost only $2.50 to $5 (Rs 219 to Rs 439). That’s 3 to 6 times less, allowing her family to enjoy outings far more often without worrying about the price. Even healthcare costs show a massive contrast. A general doctor’s visit in the US can range from $150 to $600 (Rs 13k - Rs 52k approx), while in India it’s just $7 to $17 (Rs 600 to Rs 1,400 approx)— as much as 30 times cheaper.
Even monthly bills are easier on the pocket. Kristen said her average utility costs in the US were over $200 (Rs 17.5 k approx), but in India, they hover around $40 to $50 (Rs 3.5k to 4.4k approx). As for mobile plans, she spends just $3 to $5 (Rs 263- Rs 439) a month here, compared to $50 to $70 (Rs 4.4 k to Rs 6.1k approx) back in the States.
Summing it all up, Fischer said, “There are so many more examples of things that are far more affordable in India than they are in the USA. Even though we earn less here, we live far better on what we make.”
