LG Velvet review: Highly innovative design enhances functionality

However, we noticed some lags while navigating.

HIGHLIGHT: Dual display

The idea of a foldable-screen smartphone seems pretty fascinating but there is a high cost to it. LG, however, seems to have a different approach. Instead of making the entire display foldable, LG added another display to the smartphone - more like a secondary display.

It might sound quirky, which it is. However, this allows LG to place a smartphone in a price zone that a foldable smartphone cannot enter. The Velvet ventures into this space with a second screen that is a part of a case and connects to the smartphone via USB Type-C port. The dual-screen case also comes with a small monochrome OLED display, which when closed displays basic information such as time, date, notifications, calls and more.

The dual-display cover obviously adds some weight and thickness. Opening the flip reveals two 6.8-inch FullVision OLED displays. Both the displays produce vivid colours. Some might find it useful, while others could consider this just a gimmick. For us, the big plus was the extra screen that allows users to open two to three applications at the same time. Another use case is you can use one display as a keyboard and the other as a monitor.

The phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which is kind of a setback for a 2020 smartphone. It is at best a mid-range processor. We noticed a slight delay and lag while navigating. The triple rear camera setup, which consists of a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor and a 5MP depth sensor, offers reasonable output. The dynamic range is good and the entire setup manages to retain a good amount of details as well.

The Velvet is backed by a 4300mAH battery which supports 25W fast charging. In our test, it managed to survive reasonably well.

The Velvet brings the dual-display concept at a rather affordable price of under Rs 50,000. It is high on innovation but not yet a finished article.
