LG’s latest LG G7+ ThinQ is a flagship offering that was announced a few months ago. Even though they are late to India, we appreciate the sensible pricing.

It has a Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. As we have seen on other phones, this kind of hardware will give you excellent performance. Trouble is that the G7+ tends to heat up under stress — after about 20 mins of GPS use or gaming, the phone became surprisingly hot to the touch. Thankfully, it does not get alarmingly hot nor does it display any temperature warning. The battery lasts a full day with mixed usage which is as expected but it won’t win any awards here. Heavy users will need to charge it twice a day.

The G7+ has Gorilla Glass 5 on both front and rear. We loved the hand feel of the phone thanks to the sleek body and curved design. The glass body feels and looks premium making the LG G7+ worth the asking price.

On the rear is the vertically arranged dual camera and fingerprint scanner. A new addition is the dedicated button on the left that calls up Google Assistant. You can still access the Assistant by saying ‘Ok Google’ anytime, so do you really need a dedicated hardware button for this function? One of the things that sets the LG apart is the IP68 certification for dust and water proofing. Strangely enough, it is the only phone in India to offer this feature along with a Snapdragon 845 processor (the Galaxy Note 9 uses an Exynos instead of Snapdragon here).

Display has always been one of the strengths in LG’s flagships. The LG G7+ comes with an IPS notch style display which impressed us with slim bezels, high brightness, vibrant colours and excellent viewing angles. The 3120 x 1440 pixel resolution gives it a pixel density of 564 ppi making it great for content consumption as well as reading text.

LG uses the area around the notch as a second screen. You can even choose between two styles of curve. There is option to reduce the resolution, adjust screen colours and temperature, change font, as well as the option of an always-on display. Since its an IPS panel and not OLED, you can see the entire screen staying lit-up when always-on display is enabled — this also leads to more battery consumption. That being said, we feel the display on the G7+ ThinQ is amongst the best IPS displays on the market.

The rear dual camera setup of the LG G7+ consists of two 16MP sensors — one has an aperture of f1.6 and the other is f1.9. LG typically has one wide-angle lens which makes for some great photos. The image quality is fantastic and even low light performance of the camera is great. The portrait mode does one of the most flawless edge detection we have seen. There is also an AI Cam mode where the phone uses AI to detect a scene and adjust settings for best results. You also get Google Lens integration, Cine video mode, manual photo, manual video and AR sticker modes. The front 8MP camera also has a wide-angle lens and takes images with crisp details. You also get AI camera for the front as well as a portrait mode which delivers bokeh effect with excellent edge detection. Overall, the camera on the LG G7+ delivers the quality and features that you expect from a flagship device.

Audio output deserves special mention. The phone has a Hi-Fi quad DAC and DTS:X 3D surround sound which makes a world of difference when listening to music on the phone. Audiophiles will definitely love the phone for its audio capabilities.

One big issue we have with the G7+ ThinQ is software. It runs the older Android 8.0 and not 8.1 and that too with the June security update. Another issue is that the face unlock feature is slow and sometimes takes up to 3 seconds to recognise and unlock the phone. We hope LG fixes this with a software update.

Overall, the LG G7+ ThinQ is a smartphone that delivers many of the bells and whistles you would expect from a flagship. Some obvious competition is the well-established OnePlus 6 that offers 8GB RAM and 128GB storage at the same price. The OnePlus has a better front camera, faster face unlock, amoled screen and the ultra-fast Dash charging. However, the LG is IP68 rated, offers a 2k screen, wide angle rear camera and expandable storage.
