Only rain can save Chennai: Leonardo DiCaprio on water crisis in India
Rising temperatures and depleting water levels are making headlines every day. Water crisis is becoming an increasingly harsh reality, and voices are being raised across the globe to take preventive measures to rectify the situation.
At present, Chennai's severe water crisis has caused a stir not just in India, but has also been drawing global attention. The capital of Tamil Nadu has been affected by an acute water scarcity for over two months now.
Legendary actor and Oscar award-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, also known for his work as an environmentalist, has expressed concern over the situation. In a detailed post on social media, the 'Titanic' legend drew attention to the crisis, saying that "Only rain can save Chennai from this situation".
The 44-year-old shared a picture of women trying to fetch water from an empty well, saying that the scarcity has forced people to stand in queues in order to get sufficient water. He also pointed out that due to the depleting levels, hotels and restaurants have been shut down for some time.
The capacity of Chennai's four main water reservoirs - Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Puzhal and Cholavaram - has dipped below 1% and supply is failing to meet demands, every day. Due to this, the residents are dealing with a lot of inconvenience. At present, Chennai is receiving water from its three main desalination plants, tankers and pipelines.

A few days ago, DiCaprio had drawn attention to another environmental hazard in India, sharing a video expressing concern over the Ghazipur landfill, which is expected to grow taller than the Taj Mahal very soon.

Monaco-based yacht designer George Lucian’s ‘Dare to Dream’ concept is for those who are equally passionate about yachting and flying. The superyacht is built to transport a 100 metre (330 ft) airship, which will be tethered to its 140-metre-long deck. A group of researchers from Austria believe the future belongs to submarines that don’t pollute or destroy our oceans. They designed a silent bionic submarine that moves like a manta ray without distracting other sea dwellers. It is powered by two water-cooled battery packs that provide energy for the carbon nanotubes in the wings and can reach a depth of 40 metres. Is it a plane? Or, is it a boat? It’s a wing-inground (WIG) craft that can change the way we travel. Fitted with a 7-litre V8 race-car engine, AirFish 8 is designed to be operated by two crews and classified as a merchant ship with a carrying capacity for six to eight passengers. It takes off and lands like a seaplane, and hovers just two to six metres above water at a top speed of 180 kmph.
