Lenovo A7000 review: Lightweight phablet competes with the best in market
NEW DELHI: 5.5-inch IPS display (1280 x 720 pixels), 1.5Ghz octa core Mediatek processor, 2GB RAM, 8GB + microSD slot, 8MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, dual SIM, Android 5.0, 140 grams The A7000 is Lenovo's latest budget phablet that directly competes with the Redmi Note and Yu Yureka.

In terms of looks and build quality, the A7000 is similar to the A6000- A6000 Plus that is to say , very good, especially for the price. It has a matte finish on the removable back panel under which hides the battery, dual SIM slots and microSD slot. On the side are the metallic volume and power keys that are comfortable to use. What impresses is that it is just 140 grams in weight the Yu Yureka in comparison is 152 grams.

We liked the 5.5-inch HD display for its responsiveness and vibrant colours. However, like the A6000, this one also does not use Gorilla Glass for protection and the menu buttons below the display are not backlit.

It is powered by an octa core Mediatek processor along with 2GB RAM. It comes with heavily customised Vibe user interface based on Android 5.0. In our us age, the phone worked great no issues with multitasking, running all kinds of apps as well as playing games like Shadowgun and Dead Trigger 2. Thanks to the 2,900mAh, the phone easily manages to offer one and a half days of battery life.

Camera quality is where the A7000 loses out to the competition. While both rear 8MP and front 5MP cameras take good pictures, they do not stand up to the cameras of Yureka and Redmi Note. Photos from the A7000 are low on details and have more noise compared to these two.

Notably, this is the first smartphone with Dolby Atmos technology. The built-in Dolby app gives you an equalizer to adjust audio settings and with a good pair of headphones, audio experience is unmatched from any competing smartphone. We feel that for the price, the A7000 is a great phablet option. However, the Yureka and Redmi Note have advantage in the camera and user interface over the A7000 in the same price bracket.

Lenovo A7000 has a 5.5-inch HD screen, with vibrant colours and excellent viewing angles. You cannot notice any pixilation on the smartphone's screen, though some portions may appear a little oversaturated due to the colour reproduction. It looks a little plain, maintaining the boxy look of its predecessor; made entirely of plastic, it doesn't have much to boast of on the design front.

Lenovo A7000 comes with a 1.5GHz octa-core Mediatek chip and 2GB RAM, making it a powerful smartphone for the price, right up there with Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4G. Media playback is another strength of the smartphone, which is the world's first model with Dolby Atmos technology.

The camera app several shooting modes and image editing features, but the images we captured from its 8MP camera at the booth were less than satisfactory. The camera is okay-ish under poor lighting, so we do expect that to change under normal lighting conditions.

Other key features of this smartphone are 2,900mAh battery, 5MP front camera, 2GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, 32GB microSD card support and 4G compatibility in India.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, with a 5.5-inch HD screen offering wide viewing angles and decent sunlight legibility, is pretty big and clearly not meant for people who desire to use their device with one hand. At 199 grams, it is among the heaviest smartphones we have used till date.

The phablet runs on the Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean)-based MIUI ROM. The images shot from the 13MP rear camera in daylight turned out well, with decent level of detail and good contrast. On the other hand, images shot in low-light, without flash, were grainy and full of noise.

The Redmi Note 4G is powered by an octa-core Mediatek processor with 2GB RAM; we noticed there was occasional lag while navigating through the phone's menu, browsing the web and multimedia and scrolling inside apps.

It packs a 3,100mAh battery (removable) and will last you a more than a full working day (17-18 hours) if you put the screen brightness at the highest level and use 3G data all the time.

The 5-inch HD screen of Micromax Yu Yureka has some distortion due to lower pixel density, and also found colours to be a little over saturated. The display's colour temperature is on the cooler side resulting in a blue tint. The display is also reflective resulting in slightly less optimum under-sun legibility.

The Yureka runs Cyanogen OS 11, a custom aftermarket version of Android 4.4. The look and feel is very close to stock Android barring a few UI elements, although customization is possible via themes.

The quality of images captured outdoors, in daylight was satisfactory with good level of detail, accurate colour reproduction, little noise and good contrast. The front camera captures good quality selfies and the Beauty mode really enhances them. It's also good for voice chats.

The phone is powered by a 64 bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa core chip with 1.5GHz processor cores, Adreno 405 graphics and 2GB DDR3 RAM. Yureka comes with a 2,500mAh battery, which lasts 11-12 hours on moderate usage with full brightness and keep 3G data on.

Like Lenovo A7000 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, Huawei Honor 4X has a 5.5-inch HD screen. Honor 4X smartphone is powered by 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and 2GB RAM. It comes with 8GB internal storage and also features a microSD card slot that supports cards of up to 32GB capacities.

The software is a heavily customized version of Android 4.4 (KitKat). The apps in the smartphone are spread across homescreens as there is no app drawer; on the lock screen, an upward swipe from the bottom shows music controls as well as shortcuts to camera, torch, calculator and ultra-power-saving mode.

We did not experience any lag while navigating through the phone's menu, browsing the web, sifting through multimedia, and scrolling within the apps. The 3,000mAh battery of Huawei Honor 4X can last up to a day and half easily with moderate usage.

Images captured by the Huawei Honor 4X camera in daylight turned out well with accurate level of detail, good colour reproduction and decent contrast. However, the images are not perfect, as you can notice some aberrant noise creeping in some photos.
