Anand M Shetty, founder, Organic Industries Private Limited, is not only a hardworking leader, but also a man with a golden heart.

He has a chain of industries to help build communities and the country and is a respected industry stalwart. Now, Anand M Shetty, founder, Organic Industries Private Limited, is also the Times Business Magnate of the Year 2018.

A first-generation industrialist, Shetty attributes his success to his forefathers and their tradition of leading the pack. His company — set up in 1980 — was one of the first to introduce the continuous compression moulding process in India. He is also one of the few Bunts, a predominantly business community from Karnataka, to win a prestigious award. “Bunts were initially warriors who became agriculturists. They then further evolved into restaurateurs after they started working with the rice they grew. As a community, we have always been into forward integration,” says Shetty.

God-fearing and non-compromising, Shetty believes people management, ethics and values are his most important assets. When his machines and processes were modernised, he chose to retain his people rather than let them go. Taking into account their strengths and capabilities, he invested in HR and training programmes to develop their skills and talents.

This was a reflection of his company’s core values — employment creation, quality and transparency. He even set up two large chemical plants in just nine months, a feat even an international conglomerate would have found difficult to achieve.

While plastics and chemicals have always been at the centre of controversies, Shetty has always stayed out of the debate as his products are engineered to be environment and human-friendly. His future ventures are supported by his sons Pravir and Adish, who are leading the group’s diversification into hi-tech industries.

The award is just the tip of the iceberg. Shetty’s service to society far outweighs his professional achievements. As director of the World Bunt Federation, he has undertaken the responsibility of contributing towards the health care, education and shelter needs of the underprivileged.

“Hospitality is in the Shetty blood,” he says. “We believe in service to humankind. ‘Shetty’ comes from the word ‘shreshthi’, which means above all.”
