Kumbh Mela: No half measures, please

UP govt enacted the Prayagraj Mela Authority Bill and made the 6-yearly Ardh Kumbh into a full-fledged Kumbh.

Awar of words — or rather of numbers — has broken out in UP over the Kumbh Mela between what could be called the halfs and the half-nots.

According to age-old tradition, the Purna Kumbh, or Full Kumbh, takes place every 12 years in what was Allahabad, and is now called Prayagraj, at the confluence on the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers, while a Maha Kumbh comes around every 144 years, or after 12 Purna Kumbhs.

Now, however, the Yogi Adityanath government has enacted the Prayagraj Mela Authority Bill and made the six-yearly Ardh Kumbh, scheduled to take place during January 15-March 4, into a full-fledged Kumbh, raising the hackles of the Opposition, led by Akhilesh Yadav’s SP, as well as of those who look askance at what they deem to be needless — and needling — tinkering with numeric nomenclature.

Despite such dissenting voices, Yogi Adityanath’s regime has decided to go ahead with the name change, perhaps in order to demonstrate to its critics that whether it is cracking down on crime, or organising a religious festival expected to be attended by millions, it doesn’t believe in half-measures.

Whatever is the final outcome of this updated version of the Ardh Shastra, this friction over a fraction shows that in a state that prides itself on being billed as the crucible of Indian politics, factionalism will have its day, Kumbh what may.
