Škoda Auto India boss doesn't have time for lazy people, proud of being a ‘middle-aged man in lycra’

Zac Hollis said 'middle-aged man in lycra', aka mamil, is a better mid-life crisis than other things.

Zac Hollis explains how he got into ‘mamil’ mode.
“I don’t have much time for lazy people,” says Zac Hollis. The witty Mumbai-based director at Škoda Auto India loves fitness, and while many give up on their health goals when life gets too busy, Hollis credits his job for helping him get fit.

“When you get into the line of business, you end up eating in nice places thanks to a lot of business dinners. So, I started running to keep the weight off,” he says.

Along with business making him a runner, it also made him a ‘mamil’. A what, you ask. “That’s middle-aged men in lycra,” says Hollis, laughing. “While it may not be big in India, in Europe, there is a group of people that are called, well, mamils. They will spend as much money on a bike as a car but as far as their partners are concerned, this is a much better mid-life crisis than other things.”

The UK national, who has participated in marathons across the world, started cycling after he learnt running and swimming, which led him to participate in the Ironman Triathlon. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. “With running, I got as good as I was going to get so I wanted to do the next thing. Then I met a group of people who were doing the triathlon. The first thing I did was learn to swim more than one length of the pool (laughs). After mastering that, the next thing was to buy an expensive bike, and this was a good excuse.”

Hollis says that the culture of fitness promotes a healthier lifestyle all around. “There’s nothing better than meeting a group of friends on a Sunday morning at 6 am, which creates a healthier lifestyle because you don’t end up going out on Saturday night. We cycle for around 150 km and talk about what’s going on.”

Another perk of staying fit, especially while in the training phases, according to Hollis, is eating. “My goodness, you can eat anything when you’re training 12-15 hours a week. Nothing touches you.”
