Knee problem? Second-generation implant may offer you a chance to walk again

While there are a variety of options available, choosing the right implant is key.

Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is a progressive disease designated by joint inflammation, stiffness and restorative bone response. The effective and adequate treatment in the form of total knee arthroplasty is crucial. This is the best available cure for patients suffering from severe knee problems.

The primary objective of a modern knee system is to replicate normal knee motion in a more close manner. The system has to facilitate a higher level of functioning to not only relieve pain but also to help patients regain their active lifestyle post-surgery. While there are a variety of opt ions available, choosing the right implant is key.

The right choice of implants ensures easy day-to-day functioning — this also includes daily movements where the knees are bent during routine activities. A conventional implant may make muscles and ligaments work harder, which could result in making the soft tissues move in unfamiliar ways.

On the other hand, the latest second-generation knee system is aligned to have the original knee philosophy with the same engineering principles that the human knee currently uses.

Dr J V Srinivas, a renowned name in the field of orthopaedics with over 17 years of experience, is currently the Director of Orthopaedics Department at a leading hospital in Bengaluru.

He says, “The significant development with second-generation knee replacement system is a positive development with new low friction material. They are now being further innovated in ‘oxidised zirconium’ material, this will result in the implants having a long life. The basic principle is to restore natural shapes to make a knee move normally. To have the physiological matching of the knee while attaining natural rhythm, these systems are a worthwhile option.”
