Arturo Sandoval, a 10-time Grammy winner currently in Mumbai, is a man who takes his own advice — even if it comes at great personal cost. “It’s important to listen to music, to listen again and again. Eat, sleep and drink music,” the Cuban-American trumpeter had once said. And when you recall how a young Sandoval spent three months in jail for listening to jazz on Voice of America, you see how much these words mean to him.
Sandoval defected to the US while touring with his idol, Dizzy Gillespie, whom he impressed during the latter’s visit to Cuba in 1977. Sandoval went on to establish himself as one of the generation’s foremost proponents of jazz, but says he likes all genres of music. “I like good music. It does not matter whether it is Michael Jackson or jazz classics,” said Sandoval, who went on to collaborate with an eclectic cast of musicians, from Frank Sinatra to Alicia Keys.
Over the course of a long career, he even headlined the Super Bowl Halftime Show, an honour few foreignborn musicians get.
He is performing in Mumbai on Friday.

Former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, who is currently a part of the board of directors at Amazon Inc, gave her country another reason to be proud. The top boss, who turned 64 last month, received a portrait of her own in the gallery created by artist Jon Friedman.
Nooyi was honoured for serving as chairperson in a Fortune 500 company for 25 years. She was also hailed for introducing healthier beverage options like fruit juices in place of sweetened sodas, which are perceived as unhealthy.
Nooyi, dressed in a maroon outfit, posed beside her portrait with Friedman and Museum Director Kim Sajet.
