The much-awaited Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer Khalifa finally arrived in theatres on August 20. The Malayalam action thriller takes the actor into the world of smuggling and promises a high-energy story packed with action. Directed by Vysakh, the film also features Neil Nitin Mukesh in a key role. It is jointly produced by Jinu V. Abraham and Suraj Kumar under the banner of Jiinu Abraham Innovation. Khalifa has now made a decent start at the box office.

Khalifa box office collection day-wise

According to Sacnilk.com, Khalifa collected an estimated Rs 4.90 crore in India net on its opening day. The film's India gross collection stood at around Rs 5.68 crore after adding applicable taxes.

The opening numbers indicate a steady start for the Prithviraj-led film. Khalifa was released across 1,967 shows in India on Thursday and recorded an overall theatre occupancy of 46%.

The film saw its strongest response during the night shows, which recorded 55.83% occupancy. Evening shows followed with 42.42% occupancy, while morning shows recorded 40.97%. The afternoon shows had the lowest occupancy of the day at 32.92%.

The figures suggest that the film gained momentum as the day progressed, with audiences showing greater interest in the later screenings.

As expected for a Malayalam-language release, Kerala emerged as the biggest contributor to Khalifa's Day 1 business. The state contributed around Rs 4.85 crore to the film's India gross collection, accounting for the overwhelming majority of its domestic earnings.

Karnataka emerged as the second-biggest market for the film, contributing approximately Rs 44 lakh to the opening-day gross. Tamil Nadu added around Rs 20 lakh, while Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together contributed approximately Rs 4 lakh.

The remaining parts of India accounted for about Rs 15 lakh. Combined, these markets took Khalifa's total India gross collection to Rs 5.68 crore on its first day.

With the film registering its strongest occupancy during the night, its performance over the opening weekend will be important. A strong showing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday could help the film build on its initial theatrical momentum.

For Khalifa, the focus will now shift to its weekend performance. The film's Day 1 numbers have given it a decent opening, and sustained occupancy over the next few days will determine whether it can turn the initial response into stronger box-office momentum.
