Aswin lost his leg in an accident at 19 but refused to let it define him. His wife Adithya stood by him through family pressure and his own doubts. Their bond, forged in school, strengthened over years of rebuilding. They married in 2021 and moved...

In a chat with The Humans Of Bombay, Adithya recounted her love story with Aswin and how it persevered despite him losing a limb in an accident
At the age of 19, Aswin’s life changed forever when a devastating accident resulted in the loss of his leg. For many, such a tragedy might have shattered dreams and dimmed hope, but Aswin refused to allow this life-altering moment to define his future. Instead, he chose resilience, refusing to let physical loss dictate the quality of his life or the scale of his ambitions. His journey, marked by courage and determination, was later shared through a heartfelt account by his wife Adithya in an interview with Humans of Bombay.

A Teenage Bond That Blossomed Into Love

Adithya revisited the early days of their relationship through a personal Instagram post, which was later featured by the platform. Their story began during their school years when she was 14 and Aswin was 17. What started as a simple friendship built on shared laughter and everyday academic pressures soon turned into something deeper. When Aswin expressed his feelings, Adithya initially felt overwhelmed and distanced herself. However, the absence made her realize how much he meant to her, prompting her to reconnect and admit her own emotions.

Their relationship, though tender and filled with innocent joy, quickly faced resistance from her family. Around the same period, Aswin relocated to Tamil Nadu to pursue engineering. Despite the distance, they held onto their bond, meeting frequently and nurturing their connection across states.

The Accident That Changed Everything

In May 2017, tragedy struck when Aswin was involved in a severe road accident caused by an intoxicated driver. Rushed to the hospital, he underwent prolonged medical efforts to save his leg. Unfortunately, complications forced doctors to amputate it in order to save his life. Adithya learned about the incident from his mother, and the news left her devastated.

At a time when emotional support was most needed, societal and familial pressures intensified. Her parents questioned her future with someone who now lived with a disability, even urging distance between the two. The strain became so overwhelming that Adithya reached a breaking point. Witnessing her distress, her family eventually began to understand the depth of her commitment and reconsidered their stance.

Choosing Love Over Fear

Aswin himself struggled with the aftermath of the accident, not just physically but emotionally. Believing he had become a burden, he suggested ending the relationship so Adithya could have a different life. However, her response shifted the course of their story. She challenged his perspective by asking him to imagine the situation reversed. That moment of reflection silenced his doubts and reaffirmed their bond.

Over the next four years, they slowly rebuilt their lives. Aswin completed his engineering studies and secured employment, while Adithya also finished her education. Their relationship matured alongside their personal growth, rooted in unwavering support for one another.

From Struggles to a Shared Future

In 2021, after years of perseverance, the couple decided to marry. By then, their families had witnessed the strength of their relationship and gave their blessings. Following their wedding, they moved to Canada to begin a new chapter together.

Adithya described their married life as deeply fulfilling, highlighting Aswin’s constant care and partnership. Despite his physical challenges, he remained attentive and supportive, contributing equally to their daily life. Their journey evolved from merely enduring hardships to actively embracing life, traveling, and celebrating the love they fought hard to protect.

Setting the Record Straight

Their journey captured massive attention on Instagram, drawing admiration and heartfelt responses from countless viewers. Yet, Adithya chose to clarify a widely held misunderstanding—that she deserved recognition simply for standing by her partner. She explained that their bond was never defined by a single act of loyalty, but had always been rooted in shared strength and equality, long before the life-altering accident occurred.

She highlighted that Aswin’s unwavering affection, deep respect, and inner resilience were just as crucial in holding their relationship together. In her view, their story was not about one person supporting the other, but about two individuals uplifting each other through every phase of life.

Adithya also opened up about the deeply personal experience of watching his recovery unfold. She witnessed not only the visible physical changes following the amputation but also the emotional hurdles that came with adjusting to a new reality. From moments of vulnerability to gradual acceptance, the journey demanded patience, courage, and compassion from both of them.

Ultimately, she stressed that their happiness did not stem from sacrifice on one side. Instead, it was the result of mutual dedication, shared understanding, and a love that remained steady despite the challenges they faced together.

The couple are now based in Canada. They share content related to travel, food and lifestyle on Instagram. Their Instagram profile Mallu Steps Together has over 7380 followers. On the profile it's written: "One of us walks differently. But together, we chase life fully."
