Keeping up with Kohli: How to wear a 'girlfriend kurta' like the Indian skipper

Part kurta, part mini dress, there’s no denying that Kohli can pull off pretty much anything.

Kohli was recently spotted sporting a new trend – the girlfriend kurta.
We’ve all heard about the boyfriend shirt - when women wear their partner’s shirt. But Virat Kohli showed us a new trend – the girlfriend kurta. Part kurta, part mini dress, there’s no denying that Kohli can pull off pretty much anything.

But with us mere style mortals trying to keep up, we should realise we are not Kohli and need to keep a few pointers in mind to nail this style.

Don’t go bold

The asymmetrical hemline, the off-centre buttons - there is a lot going on with this kurta so take a cue from Kohli and keep the colour simple. A patterned or embroidered kurta would take away from the silhouette of the kurta. This way your kurta is the main point of focus of your look but it’s not overpowering.

Do not over-accessorise
Let the kurta do all the talking. Too much bling when wearing something stand out looks like you’re trying too hard to make a fashion statement. For men, a simple signet ring will suffice.

Do keep the trousers straight
When it comes to the type of trousers – opt for something between a churidar and a palazzo. The former will look too stark against the billowing kurta while the latter can look sloppy. Opt for straight cut pants in black or white. Again, stick to a muted colour so that it doesn’t distract from the kurta.

Do show some ankle
When it comes to pairing this look with shoes, you can opt for closed formal shoes or open toe sandals depending on the formality of the event. However, unlike Kohli, you should show some ankle to add a break in the look.

Do be realistic
This style is not for everyone. Given that is it quite unconventional, this type of kurta is ideally worn for casual events or parties. It’s best to give it a skip for formal events. It would suit those with an athletic frame the best. However, if you’re carrying extra weight around your mid-section or thighs, the A-line structure might accentuate these areas in an unflattering way.

Arjun Gadkari, President, Nilgai Foods

“For me, Steve McQueen had the greatest style. He always looked cool, no matter what the occasion. He looked effortlessly casual on a motorcycle in jeans and a tee, but when he got into a three-piece suit, he was sharper than James Bond. He defined the anti-hero look.”
