Kavin Mittal's hiring tip for entrepreneurs: Great people make great company

The Hike CEO revealed the one assumption he regrets making.

There's one trait Hike CEO Kavin Mittal looks for in employees.
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that great companies are built around great people. Billionaire Virgin Group founder Richard Branson built a multi-billion dollar company with good people. His mantra was ‘Find the right people to work with and you can’t go wrong.’

It’s a mantra that Hike CEO Kavin Bharti Mittal agrees with but if he could, he would like to add a qualifier – great companies are built around great people who choose to be the best version of themselves.

The entrepreneur recently took to Twitter to share how screening for this trait was one of the hardest lessons he learnt as he began scaling up his business.

“One of my biggest mistakes while building Hike was to assume that everyone we hired wanted to be the best version of themselves. It’s quite the idealistic mindset and I learnt the hard way that isn’t true,” he tweeted.

Learning from his own experience, he cautioned other entrepreneurs, “As you scale beyond 100, be mindful of assumptions like these. They can make your grip slip on who enters the door.”

“Screening for this trait is so important. These people exist but you have to work hard to find them. You gotta find them and surround yourselves with them.”

“When you’re building something new, this is all that matters. Strategy, tactics, plans will all evolve, they are meant to in a world changing so fast. At the end of the day a great company = great people.”
