Douglas and his wife were “both having extramarital affairs”

In the excerpt from One Helluva Ride published in PEOPLE, Douglas detailed how the affair grew with his costar. “Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature,” he wrote, noting that “things at home were in a bad place” with then-wife Diandra Douglas and explaining that they were “both having extramarital affairs” at the time.

Douglas said that he was “still technically married, but separated” from Diandra when he went to Mexico. They share a son, Cameron.

The relationship was so secret that director could not find

The duo were also part of Romancing the Stone sequel The Jewel of the Nile (1985) as well as The War of the Roses (1989), and said that their onscreen “chemistry” was “so strong” that “audiences have been certain for years that we were in a relationship together while making” their first film together.

The two-time Oscar winner said that he would “sneak into her hotel room after everybody was asleep,” and that “Kathleen and I were keeping the chemistry alive” as the characters fell in love. The relationship was so secret that it went undetected by director Robert Zemeckis and costar Danny DeVito.

Then Douglas’ wife visited production

However, the secret romance ended when Douglas’ wife visited production. “Diandra grew suspicious. A woman’s intuition, I suppose,” he wrote. “At some point, she was alone with Kathleen and made it clear to her that we were still married. Her view of the terms of our separation was different from mine. This gave Kathleen pause. She didn’t want to interfere.”

Douglas and Diandra were together after that, but they divorced in 1995, and he married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000.
