Jonty Rhodes reveals the one thing Colin Bland could do that he can't

There was one thing Colin Bland could do which his fielding successor — Jonty Rhodes — could not. Stay quiet. Over a drink at an event in Mumbai recently, Rhodes spoke about his illustrious countryman, who passed away in April at the age of 80.

“People would tell me I have to be quiet while fielding, so that the batsman did not always know where I am,” Rhodes said. “I could not do that. But from what I know Colin was very good at that. One moment he was in the covers and then at mid-on.”

Bland played 21 Tests for South Africa in the ’60s, before Rhodes was born. But the two are forever linked because of their fielding prowess. Just that one was chirpy, the other a silent operator.
