John Abraham recently revealed he had faced a lot of criticism as an outsider
John Abraham has built an enduring reputation as one of Hindi cinema’s foremost action heroes. Over the years, he has earned both critical appreciation and immense fan support for playing memorable characters such as the fearless biker Kabir in Dhoom and the determined police officer Yashvardhan in the Dhoom franchise. His towering screen presence, athletic build, and commitment to high-octane roles have cemented his place in the industry. Yet, behind the success and stardom lies a journey marked by intense scrutiny and sustained criticism.

Early Years Marked by Skepticism

Speaking at the SCREEN Masterclass in a discussion with Priyanka Sinha Jha, COO of Screen Academy, John reflected on the challenges he encountered when he first stepped into films in 2003. According to him, his entry into the industry was not met with warmth but with sharp judgment. He explained that he was among the very few performers at the time who did not come from a film background. Before him, only actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar had managed to carve their own space without film lineage, and even that path had not been easy.

John shared that he often felt he was subjected to more intense criticism than many of his contemporaries. The early phase of his career, he indicated, was particularly testing, as he constantly had to prove his credibility in an environment that was not always welcoming to newcomers without connections.

Choosing Focus Over Noise

Despite the negativity, John adopted a singular approach to survive and grow. He described himself as someone who remained single-minded, concentrating only on his goals rather than being distracted by external chatter. Instead of reacting to public opinion or engaging in image-building exercises, he preferred to let his work speak for itself.

He also pointed out that he has never relied on publicity machinery to shape narratives about him. Avoiding media manipulation and refraining from planting stories, he chose a path that might have made him more exposed to criticism but allowed him to preserve his authenticity. John expressed confidence that audiences understand his values and recognize the sincerity behind his journey, even if the road has not always been smooth.
