Joe Manganiello shared about his marriage with his ex-wife Sofía Vergara in his new memoir Bloodlines, to be released on October 13. In an interview with PEOPLE, the actor describes his seven-year battle with a mysterious autoimmune illness. He also shared that this illness nearly killed him. He says the health crisis affected his marriage and changed how he viewed his future.

Manganiello explained it on Instagram: “BLOODLINES is my untold story of survival, documenting my near-decade long struggle with a mysterious illness. My search for answers took me from death’s door, around the globe, and back through time, in the hopes of understanding why I suffered and to find the strength to continue on.”

According to PEOPLE, Manganiello, 49, claims that his relationship with Vergara eventually “became devoid of any emotionality whatsoever.” He also said that Vergara refused to hug him.

Manganiello had an undiagnosed autoimmune illness. His symptoms included severe abdominal pain, fevers, rashes, and rectal bleeding. He even lost about 60 pounds and underwent several colonoscopies and other procedures. Later Manganiello got engaged to actress and TV host Caitlin O’Connor.

About having children, Vergara told a Spanish newspaper that she did not want to be an “old mom” as her husband was younger. Manganiello later gave a different account. In his memoir, he says his serious health problems changed his thinking about fatherhood. After failed IVF attempts, he says he did not want to leave Vergara raising a child alone if he died.
