Jennifer Lopez introduces daughter Emme with gender-neutral pronouns, netizens accuse her of child abuse

American popstar Jennifer Lopez has landed herself in controversy.

Recently, the songwriter introduced her daughter, Emme, using gender-neutral pronouns at a public event.

Before singing a cover of Christina Perri's 'A Thousand Years', JLo referred to her 14-year-old daughter as 'them' and 'they' during the 6th Annual Blue Diamond Gala hosted by Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.



The mother-daughter duo performed at the gala to raise $3.6 million for local causes. The video that went viral on social media showed Emme using a rainbow-coloured microphone during the performance.

Emme also joined JLo for a verse of Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' and the intro of her hit 'Let's Get Loud'.

"The last time we performed together was in a big stadium like this and I ask them to sing with me all the time, and they won't. So this is a very special occasion. They are very, very busy. Booked. And pricey! It costs me when they come out. But they're worth every single penny because they're my favourite duet partner of all time. So if you will indulge me," the 52-year-old was quoted as saying about the young author.

Emme is one of JLo and her former husband Marc Anthony's twins. Before this, the two had performed in the Super Bowl halftime in 2020.

While she has been receiving a lot of praise for her forward-thinking, some fans also accused her of child abuse. Some went on to say that she was confusing her teenage daughter.






It is assumed Emme prefers to be identified as they/them and many fans loved how JLo respected their decision.




Gender-neutral pronouns such as they and them are used for people who identify themselves as non-binary.
