Jeff Weiner steps down as LinkedIn CEO, colleagues get emotional; Nadella thanks him for ‘tremendous leadership’

Weiner will now be reporting to Microsoft CEO Nadella.

In what can be called the end of an era, American businessman and LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner will step down as the Chief Executive Officer of the company on June 1. The global Head of Product of LinkedIn, Ryan Roslanksky, will fill his shoes and take over the post of the CEO.

Weiner’s 11-year run has been full of ups and downs. Under his leadership, LinkedIn expanded its membership from 33 million in 2008 to nearly 675 million, with revenue rising from $78 million to more than $7.5 billion in the trailing twelve months.

From LinkedIn’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2011 to its 2016 acquisition by Microsoft, Weiner has helmed the ship that is LinkedIn and like a good captain, has kept steering through high tides.

The LinkedIn post stated that Weiner will serve as company’s chief executive chairman on the senior leadership team and will report to Satya Nadella.

The Microsoft CEO commented on the post, extending a warm welcome to Weiner. Nadella said that he had learnt a great deal from Jeff and is excited for the new role.

“Jeff, Thank you for your leadership of LinkedIn. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from you over the past few years, particularly your clear focus from vision to values. I am grateful for your continued leadership and look forward to working together in your new role,” wrote the tech mogul.

Seeing Jeff leave the brand he had worked hard on since the last 11 years made the LinkedIn family emotional.

From the VP of LinkedIn, Tomer Cohen to senior VP of engineering LinkedIn, Mohak Shroff, Weiner was congratulated by several of his co-workers.

“Congrats, Ryan! As much fun as it’s been working with you for the last 11 years, I couldn’t be more excited for what comes next,” wrote Shroff. “I can't think of a better, more qualified, leader than Ryan to take this amazing company and organization to the next level,” commented Cohen.

With a major shake-up happening in the senior leadership of LinkedIn, it will be interesting to see what results it will yield.
