US vice president JD Vance’s Dumbledore Halloween costume goes viral; internet roasts his Harry Potter look

US Vice President JD Vance brought a little Hogwarts magic to Halloween, dressing up as Albus Dumbledore while carrying his baby son, who was dressed as the house-elf Dobby. The family’s Harry Potter-inspired costumes quickly caught attention online, with reactions ranging from playful criticism of Vance’s look to praise for the baby’s outfit.

‘Vice President Dumbledore’ wishes everyone a safe Halloween

In a video shared on October 31, Vance appeared on a decorated porch wearing a long silver-grey wig, a pointed wizard hat and a shiny robe. Holding his son, he introduced himself as “Vice President Dumbledore” and wished people a happy Halloween. “Have fun. Be safe. Eat a lot of candy,” he said in the clip, as reported by The Indian Express.

His son’s knitted cap, complete with large ears, resembled Dobby, the loyal house-elf from the fantasy series. JD Vance also posted a family photograph featuring Second Lady Usha Vance and their children in themed costumes. One child appeared dressed as Harry Potter, while another wore a spider costume. The family posed among pumpkins and autumn decorations.

Internet reacts to JD Vance’s costume

The costume prompted a mixed response on social media. Some users poked fun at Vance’s interpretation of Dumbledore, with one comment quoted by The Indian Express calling it “the worst Dumbledore costume I’ve ever seen.” Others focused on the baby, with a user saying the child was “ridiculously cute.” The family’s photograph was captioned, “Happy Halloween from the Second Family!”

JD Vance had reportedly revealed his costume plans before Halloween, explaining that his children were fans of Harry Potter. As Roya News reported, he also joked about the resemblance between Dumbledore’s white hair and beard and his own appearance.

JD Vance’s Halloween costume last year

The vice president’s Halloween posts have drawn online attention before. In 2025, he dressed up as an exaggerated version of himself inspired by the viral “Fat JD” meme, wearing a curly wig and wide-eyed expression. According to People, the costume also referenced a widely discussed exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier that year. Vance’s Halloween video ended with a playful reminder to trick-or-treaters to “say thank you.” This year, the family opted for a shared fantasy theme, with Vance taking on the role of Hogwarts’ headmaster and his youngest son appearing as one of the series’ most recognisable magical creatures.
