JBL Live 780NC review: JBL quietly promotes its mid-series flagship

For years, the JBL Live line had a clear job. It sat below the flagship Tour series, above the budget Tune range, and offered a generous feature sheet at a price that never quite tipped into premium territory. The Live 780NC breaks that pattern on purpose.

This is the most feature-complete Live headphone JBL has launched in India under the Live branding. It borrows several features that were previously reserved for the Tour series, including adaptive ANC, LDAC support, Personi-Fi hearing calibration, multipoint connectivity, spatial audio, and up to 65 hours of battery life. The result is a pair of headphones that feels far more ambitious than earlier Live models.

Instead of competing with upper mid-range headphones, the Live 780NC now finds itself facing increasingly capable premium rivals. The question is no longer whether JBL has built a good pair of headphones. It's whether the Live branding still makes sense at this price.

Price and availability

The JBL Live 780NC is priced at ₹15,999 in India. It is available for purchase through the JBL India website, Amazon, and Flipkart.

Design

The Live 780NC doesn't try to reinvent JBL's design language. It sticks with a familiar plastic construction, padded earcups, and a folding hinge that makes it easy to carry. The materials don't feel luxurious in the way some aluminium-clad competitors do, but the finish is clean, fingerprints are well controlled, and the overall construction feels durable enough for daily commuting.

JBL offers the headphones in Black, Blue, White, Green, Sand, Orange, and Purple. We tested the Blue variant, which certainly stands out, but if we were buying a pair ourselves, we'd still pick the Black model. It looks cleaner, more understated, and is less likely to go out of style over time.

Comfort is one of its biggest strengths. Even after several hours of listening, the clamping force remains gentle, the ear cushions stay comfortable, and the headphones never become fatiguing. At 271 grams, they're also light enough to disappear during long listening sessions.

The synthetic leather ear cushions also feel soft and premium, although they're the part of the headphones most likely to show wear after extended use, especially in hot and humid climates.

One downside is that JBL doesn't currently sell official replacement ear pads for the Live 780NC, and compatible third-party options are still scarce given how new the headphones are. That means worn ear cushions may be harder to replace than on some competing models.

And while JBL follows the traditional design language associated with a pair of headphones, we would prefer the button placements like the Nothing Headphones now. Purely because the buttons are well seperated there and easier to identify.

Sound quality

JBL continues to tune its consumer headphones with an energetic signature. Out of the box, the Live 780NC delivers punchy bass, clear vocals, and enough sparkle in the treble without becoming harsh. It's a tuning that works well across Bollywood, pop, EDM, podcasts, and casual movie watching.

Audiophiles looking for complete neutrality may still want to spend time inside the JBL Headphones app.
Fortunately, the app remains one of JBL's strongest advantages. Besides a full equaliser, it includes Personi-Fi, which builds a personalised sound profile based on a short hearing test. Unlike many software gimmicks, the difference here is noticeable, especially if you listen for long periods.

LDAC support also gives Android users access to higher bitrate wireless audio, something that's still missing from several competing headphones in this price bracket.

Noise cancellation

Adaptive ANC performs reliably rather than dramatically. It removes predictable low-frequency noise like aircraft hum, air conditioners, and metro trains without creating uncomfortable pressure inside the earcups. Voices and sudden high-frequency sounds still find their way through, but that's typical for headphones in this category.
Transparency mode also sounds natural enough for quick conversations without removing the headphones.

Battery life

Battery life remains one of JBL's biggest advantages. The company claims up to 65 hours without ANC and around 50 hours with ANC enabled. In real-world testing, the numbers come close enough that battery anxiety simply disappears.

Charging is equally practical. A short top-up provides several hours of playback, making it easy to recover before a commute or flight. This is where the Live 780NC earns its premium positioning. Multipoint Bluetooth works reliably across phones and laptops. Wear detection pauses music automatically when the headphones are removed. The JBL Headphones app remains comprehensive without becoming overwhelming, offering ANC controls, EQ adjustments, Personi-Fi, gesture customisation, and firmware updates.

Spatial audio is included, although like many implementations, it feels more like an optional enhancement than a feature you'll leave enabled permanently. The decision ultimately depends on which strengths matter more to you.

Verdict

The JBL Live 780NC is exactly what you'd expect from JBL, only better. It builds on the company's strengths with excellent sound, reliable ANC, impressive battery life, and a refined, comfortable design that works well for everyday listening. That said, the market has become far more competitive. At ₹15,999, buyers now have compelling alternatives, with the Nothing Headphone (1) standing out as one of the strongest options in this price bracket thanks to its distinctive design and feature set.

If you're someone who likes trying something different, it's worth considering the competition. But if you'd rather stick with a proven audio brand that consistently delivers, the Live 780NC is an easy recommendation. It may not be the most exciting choice, but it's one of the safest.
