AHMEDABAD: Japan got a feel of traditional art forms from Gujarat’s arid Kutch region recently when artisans from the region participated in Kutch Week in Osaka. Expanding the exposure to other countries will increase the demand for these products and opportunity for these craftswomen, said managing trustee of Shrujan Ami Shroff who accompanied the team of artisans.

“With the Lakme Fashion week we recently participated in, where we were showcased by well known designers Sudha Patel and Pam Easton, and now with the invitation to participate in the “Kutch Week” in Osaka, we are very overwhelmed and grateful for the response we have received. These efforts and exposure are helping us gain a deeper understanding of the global market,” she said.

The growth in success of the online market space has also contributed to our being able to reach international markets as people from anywhere can purchase products of their liking online from our Facebook page now, she added.

Shrujan showcases the art forms coming out of the craftswomen of the Kutch region. These art forms in themselves bear the distinct markings of cross cultural exchanges already.

There could be a type of embroidery or a particular stitch which could be distinct from others, having been passed down within households from one generation to the next.
