Jackie Shroff’s career trajectory was nothing short of dramatic. His journey to success was one of the genuine rags-to-riches stories. He tasted both stratospheric success and catastrophic failure. In an interview with Ranveer Allahabia, the ‘Hero’ star recalled how he once stayed in a 10x10 room in Mumbai at the Teen Batti chawl. He reminisced about how he slept on the floor of the chawl and a rat bit him in the night.

"I used to sit on the floor and eat, which is the best way to eat, I think. My mother would cook, and I would sit on the ground and eat. Those memories haven’t left my mind. I used to sleep on the floor of this room. I saw a snake in the corner of that room. Once a rat bit me and my mom. This I am talking about mid 60s that time around. I sometimes go there; it is a place where I grew up…” he revealed.

Shroff made his acting debut with the 1982 film Swami Dada, which starred Mithun Chakraborty in the lead. However, his breakthrough came with the 1983 action romance Hero. The film became a huge success and catapulted him to superstardom overnight. Throughout the 80s, Shroff tasted success through several hits, including Andar Baahar (1984), Jaanoo and Yudh (1985). His movie Karma became the highest-grossing film of 1986. Other landmark films he starred in during this time were Ram Lakhan, Parinda and Tridev. He acted in popular films during the 1990s, including Saudagar (1991), Angaar (1992), Gardish (1993), Khalnayak (1993), 1942: A Love Story (1994), Rangeela (1995), Agni Sakshi (1996), Border (1997), and Shapath (1997).


However, like all good things, the career high didn’t last forever. Once, one of the most sought-after leading men in Bollywood, one poor financial decision made Jackie become bankrupt. He had to sell his house.

A Production Venture Turns Into a Crisis

Jackie Shroff and his wife, Ayesha Shroff, ventured into film production by establishing Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited. The company backed projects such as *Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain* and *Boom*. The latter marked Katrina Kaif's acting debut and also brought together established names including Amitabh Bachchan, Gulshan Grover and Zeenat Aman. However, despite its star-studded cast, *Boom* performed poorly at the box office.

The film's commercial failure pushed the Shroff family into a devastating financial situation. They were forced to part with their home and sell household belongings, including their furniture, to deal with the losses.

Piracy Deepened the Trouble

During a conversation with Zero1 Clips by Zerodha, Ayesha explained that *Boom* had already been distributed across different parts of India before it reached theatres. However, the movie was illegally copied, and pirated DVDs began circulating outside the original distribution network.

As the pirated versions spread, distributors withdrew from the project just days before its scheduled release. This created an immediate financial crisis because distributors were responsible for paying the producer, who then used that money to meet various production-related obligations.

With the film's release only a week away and the family facing an acute shortage of funds, Jackie decided to proceed regardless of the circumstances. The ordeal placed enormous pressure on Ayesha and caused her significant stress during an already difficult period.

Years Of Earnings Wiped Out

The disastrous outcome of Boom erased a substantial portion of the wealth Jackie had built since entering the film industry with Swami Dada in 1982. What had been accumulated over years of acting was suddenly put at risk because of one unsuccessful production venture.

Yet, the financial setback did not make Jackie abandon his responsibilities. Instead, he focused on settling the money owed to others and ensuring that his family's reputation remained intact.

Protecting His Principles

For Jackie, the loss was part of the uncertainty that comes with running a business. He accepted that ventures can succeed at one point and fail at another and that financial highs cannot be expected to last forever.

“I knew that we tried something and we lost something. If I had to pay for it, I’d pay. I had worked as much as I could, and we repaid everybody so that my family’s name gets clear. Ups and downs are common in a business. It is not necessary that it’s always going to stay up. Sometimes it’s up and sometimes it’s down, but you need to know how to keep your sanity and ethics,” he told Bollywood Bubble.

The Turnaround

Shroff established a career as a veteran supporting actor in the 2000s in films such as Mission Kashmir, Devdas, Hulchul, Bhagam Bhag, etc. Off-screen, one investment he made helped him become one of the richest men in Bollywood.

International players entered the Indian cable television market in 1994 following the announcement of the Union Government's New Economic Policy of globalisation and deregulation. Numerous media companies, such as Star, have joined the Indian market. Sony Entertainment Television was able to start operations in India thanks in large part to Jackie and his wife, Ayesha. Ayesha recalled how they invested Rs 1 lakh in Sony and earned Rs 100 crore in an interview with Zero1 Hustle's YouTube channel.

The actor has an incredible net worth of Rs 212 crore, according to a GQ India report. Today he lives in an 8BHK apartment at Maximum City. The house reportedly costs a whopping Rs 31 crore. It is a sea-facing flat, has a private open air gym, rock climbing studio, a stargazing deck and a theatre, has eight bedrooms.
