After 15 years of marriage, actor Vivek Oberoi has a simple way of looking at relationships: love alone is not enough. In conversations with Sadhika Sehgal for MensXP and with Mirchi Plus, the Saathiya actor has spoken about why marriage requires trust, respect, compassion and commitment. He also opened up about choosing his wife Priyanka Alva every day and explained why spending time together and treating each other as equals can keep a relationship strong.

Vivek Oberoi on why marriage matters

In an interview with Sadhika Sehgal for MensXP, Vivek Oberoi was asked whether marriage is important. The actor said he believes marriage is a practice in several aspects of life, particularly teamwork, trust, compassion, respect and commitment. Explaining the idea of marriage as teamwork, Oberoi pointed out that simply deciding that something will be done a certain way does not necessarily work in a relationship. Instead, couples have to learn how to work together.

He also stressed the importance of trust and compassion, saying marriage can teach people how to respect their partner even after years of familiarity. According to Oberoi, familiarity can sometimes lead partners to take each other for granted. That is why maintaining an inner sense of respect remains important. He further said that a person should neither disrespect their partner nor allow others to disrespect them.

For Oberoi, commitment is perhaps the biggest lesson. When two people decide to build trust and a life together, he believes they have to remain committed to that path.

'Time and respect' are important for love

Oberoi has also spoken about relationships and love in an interview with Mirchi Plus. The Saathiya actor described love as a beautiful experience but said that time and respect are two essential elements without which love cannot thrive. He observed that love naturally makes people want to spend time with each other. However, modern relationships can sometimes leave couples struggling to make time for one another.

Oberoi said that having a wife or partner who genuinely wants to spend time with you is something to value. He also highlighted respect as a crucial part of a healthy relationship. For him, respect is not limited to physical behaviour. The way partners speak to each other matters too, and verbal abuse should have no place in a marriage. Oberoi described this as a marriage of equals, emphasising mutual consideration rather than one-sided expectations.

Vivek Oberoi says he would choose Priyanka again

In another MensXP interview, Oberoi shared a personal perspective on his marriage to Priyanka Alva. He said that when he wakes up and sees her, he still feels love. He also described asking himself whether, if he had the freedom to choose anyone in the world, he would still choose Priyanka. His answer, he said, remains yes.

Oberoi explained that being able to feel the same choice repeatedly, whether every day, every month or even after many years, can feel more liberating to him than the idea of an open marriage.

Vivek Oberoi and Priyanka Alva's marriage

Vivek Oberoi married Priyanka Alva, the daughter of Karnataka minister Jeevaraj Alva, on October 29, 2010, in Bangalore. The couple have two children, a son and a daughter. More than a decade into their marriage, Oberoi's comments suggest that he views a lasting relationship as something that requires continuous effort rather than something sustained by love alone.
