‘It is creeping me out’: The ‘Gen Z stare’ at work leaves employee searching for answers
A viral workplace conversation explores the Gen Z stare phenomenon. This behavior involves a blank expression or prolonged silence from younger colleagues. Experts suggest digital communication and social anxiety may contribute to these interact...

The Gen Z stare that turned awkward
According to the employee, the unusual interactions began around seven to eight months earlier when he first met a younger co-worker. She introduced herself by mentioning that she received his weekly work emails. Since those emails were sent to hundreds of employees, he responded light-heartedly, pointing out that she already had an advantage because she knew who he was while he had a large mailing list to manage. At the time, he thought nothing of the exchange and moved on.
However, their future encounters took an unexpected turn. The employee recalled greeting the colleague during the company's holiday party, in the elevator and later in the office cafeteria. On each occasion, he said she appeared to respond with little or no acknowledgement, often maintaining a blank expression before walking away. Although he initially assumed the two simply did not get along, he insisted he had no intention of forcing a friendship or seeking her approval.
The incident that truly unsettled him happened during a recent lunch break. While collecting a sandwich and preparing to leave the cafeteria, he sensed someone watching him. Looking across the dining area, he noticed the same colleague sitting with a group of co-workers. According to him, while the others were engaged in conversation, she remained silent and continued looking in his direction. The prolonged stare left him puzzled, prompting him to jokingly dismiss romantic interest because of their noticeable age difference. Instead, he humorously wondered if there was some unknown reason behind the behaviour, leaving Reddit users to speculate alongside him.
Reddit users offer their own theories
The discussion quickly drew a variety of interpretations. One commenter believed the awkwardness may have stemmed from their very first conversation. In that person's view, the younger employee had likely been trying to make a friendly professional connection, but the response about the lengthy email distribution list may have unintentionally come across as dismissive. The commenter suggested a warmer reply acknowledging her interest could have made a better first impression and possibly avoided future discomfort.
Others offered more practical explanations. Some felt that after several attempts at greeting someone without receiving a response, the employee would be better off simply moving on instead of continuing to initiate conversations. Another user pointed out that many younger employees frequently wear wireless earbuds at work, meaning they often fail to hear colleagues calling out to them. For many readers, the incident highlighted how simple misunderstandings, differing communication styles and workplace assumptions can sometimes create far more confusion than intended.
