iT Hub K5 Projector review: Turn your ceiling into big screen

We found the colours, contrast and brightness to be very good for the small size.

A projector is an easy way to get a large screen at a low cost. And if that projector happens to be lightweight, wireless and portable, there’s a whole lot more you can do with it.

The K5 is an Android projector with a unique, cylindrical design. You can project on the ceiling or swivel the top half down to project on a wall.

It’s made of aluminium and weighs just 400 grams – ideal to carry around in a bag or backpack. It uses DLP technology with an LED backlight for a clear image. There are no recurring costs because the LED light source (100 ANSI lumens brightness) is rated for 30,000 hours of operation.

Being Android, it has its own interface and you can sign in to start downloading apps. It comes with an infrared remote control and has USB + mini HDMI inputs for external video sources.

We tried it with Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar and YouTube (Netflix does not work). It was easy to sign in and start viewing content immediately because a tiny speaker is built in too.

If you want to use it during the day in a well-lit room, keep the screen size between 20-30 inches (by varying the distance of projector to wall). In a dark room, you can get a very usable 65-inch screen size.

We found the colours, contrast and brightness to be very good for the small size.

However, we docked a couple of stars because of the old Android version (5.1), incompatibility with the Netflix app, a remote that wasn’t very responsive and a loudspeaker that’s not very loud or very clear. Our point of comparison was a Nebula Capsule (which is also 100 ANSI lumens).

The Capsule (not available officially in India) costs US$350 but has Android 7.1, much better & louder speakers, longer battery life, app control on iOS/ Android and full size HDMI input.
