Over the past week, most Facebook timelines have had a new visual treat to offer. You may have seen photos of your friends and friends of friends on your timeline getting that artistic touch.

If you are wondering where such artistic and aesthetically-pleasing pictures - inspired by Van Gogh, Picasso & Levitan - came from, we'll help.



Such beautiful works of art have been possible, all thanks to an app called Prisma. For iOS users, this photo-editing tool gives a "unique combination of neural networks and artificial intelligence that helps transform memorable moments into timeless art," as their website promises.

The 15mb application requires iOS 8.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The results are so stunning and unique that it kind of makes the Instagram filters look a bit jaded.

For Android users, there is good news too! Prisma Labs, the company behind the tool, has now promised an Android app by the end of the month.
