You thought love was forever? Well, with the recent breakup of Muppet couple Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, it's time to review other cartoon pairings.

Fred and Wilma Flintstone

Relationship status: Stuck with you till the end

For a wife from the Stone Age, Wilma is no shrinking violet. She keeps Fred wrapped around her finger and darts withering looks of disapproval each time he gets distracted by other women. The 2001 movie briefly flirted with the two of them divorcing but then decided against it. A sensible choice since the dating scene in the Stone Age might have been still evolving, in a manner of speaking.

Popeye and Olive Oyl

Relationship status: Growing old with each other

Yes, Olive is gangly, awkward and plays hard to get but this is an old-fashioned romance. Popeye's relentless affection towards his lady is only matched by his spinach addiction. Funnily, the man who voiced Popeye for a long time — Jack Mercer — was married to the voice of Olive, Margie Hines. Their relationship ended but Popeye and Olive seem like the real deal.

SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star

Relationship status: Best friends forever

No matter what the challenge facing them, this pair has an unending zest for life. They complement each other. SpongeBob is naïve but a ball of energy. Patrick is sweet but oh-so-dumb (he makes SpongeBob look like a genius in comparison). Without each other, these two would hit rock bottom even in a place that's called Bikini Bottom.

Peter and Lois Griffin

Relationship status: No way, they are still together?

The Griffin family is pure dysfunction. In the sitcom, the two have crossed so many marital boundaries, including infidelity, it's a miracle that they have survived. In a perverse way, the Griffins have done so much to offend each other that splitting up or staying together has lost any significance.

Homer and Marge Simpson

Relationship status: Complicated but healthy

After a Simpsons writer recently revealed that Girls star Lena Dunham would vie for Homer's affection in one episode, fans threw a hissy fit. But any fears of a split were laid to rest. Although if Marge were to ever ditch Homer, we'd understand. Even the truest of loves can only take so much of a doughnut-eating, out-ofshape sloth.
