Eugene Fama, the “Father of Modern Finance” and a respected Nobel Laureate, has delivered a harrowing prediction for the world’s most famous cryptocurrency, claiming it could soon become completely worthless.

As the crypto market continues to ride a wave of hype, speculation, and celebrity endorsements, Fama warns that Bitcoin’s inherent flaws make it a financial time bomb waiting to detonate.

The Bitcoin Bubble: Why Fama Believes It Will Burst

Speaking on the Capitalisn’t podcast with hosts Luigi Zingales and Bethany McLean, Fama didn’t mince words about why Bitcoin—and all cryptocurrencies—are fundamentally unsustainable.

“Cryptocurrencies are such a puzzle because they violate all the rules of a medium of exchange,” Fama explained. “They don’t have a stable real value. That kind of medium of exchange is not supposed to survive.”

Unlike fiat currencies, which are backed by governments and central banks, Bitcoin is entirely dependent on market demand. If demand were to disappear, Fama argues, Bitcoin’s price would collapse—potentially to zero.

“The problem with all the cryptos is that in order to create some trust in the system, you basically bound the supply. And once you bound the supply, the price is driven entirely by demand.”

Without the backing of a central authority, Bitcoin’s existence hinges on whether people continue to see value in it. If enthusiasm wanes, its price could vanish overnight.

A False Sense of Security?

Bitcoin has seen a resurgence in popularity in 2024, thanks in part to Donald Trump’s embrace of cryptocurrency. Not only has he become the first sitting U.S. president to use crypto for transactions, but he and First Lady Melania Trump even launched their own meme coins.

This newfound mainstream adoption has given Bitcoin an illusion of legitimacy, but Fama argues that it doesn’t change the fundamental issue: Bitcoin still has no intrinsic value. “If demand for Bitcoin disappears, so does its pricing,” Fama emphasized.

When pressed by podcast hosts about whether Bitcoin’s price could eventually crash to zero, Fama delivered a chilling response: “I would say it’s close to one.”

He went even further, stating that he hopes Bitcoin collapses because if it doesn’t, it would force economists to rethink the entire field of monetary theory.

“I’m hoping it will bust, because if it doesn’t, you have to start all over with monetary theory.”
