Apple has entered the foldable-phone era at a symbolic moment. John Ternus officially became Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, replacing Tim Cook, and just days later Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone. The timing makes the Duo one of the defining products of the company’s new chapter, although its development obviously predates Ternus’ tenure as CEO. Apple itself calls it the “most transformational change to iPhone since the original”. But Apple is not entering an empty market. Samsung has been refining foldables for years, and the latest Galaxy Z Fold8 takes a different approach to the same book-style design. Here is how the two compare

The iPhone Duo opens into a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a nano-texture finish, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On display and up to 3,000 nits outdoor brightness. Its outer screen measures 5.4 inches.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 also has a 7.6-inch main display, but uses a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 4:3 unfolded ratio. Its cover screen is slightly larger at 5.5 inches, with a 10:16 ratio. Samsung says both screens reach 3,000 nits. At 201g, however, the Fold8 is lighter than the 254g iPhone Duo.

Apple gives the Duo a 48MP Fusion Main + 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide system. The main camera also provides optical-quality 2x telephoto capability, while features such as Duo Preview, Smart Take, Dual Capture and 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120fps exploit the foldable design.

Samsung's standard Fold8 has dual 50MP Wide and Ultra Wide cameras, with 2x optical-quality zoom. It also offers 8K video, Nightography, ProVisual Engine and Dual Recording. Importantly, the 200MP main camera and 10MP telephoto belong to the Fold8 Ultra, not the regular Fold8.
