iPhone Duo teardown examines display issues, dust protection and repair costs

Some users of the iPhone Duo have reported issues with inner display cracks and bright lines. An iFixit teardown highlighted potential reasons for these failures

iPhone Duos carry Apple’s one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use

Some iPhone Duo users have reported inner display issues, including cracks and bright lines along the fold. An iFixit teardown, reported by MacRumors, has examined the phone’s construction and possible explanations for these failures. How widespread the issues are remains unclear.

Dust protection compared with Galaxy Z Fold8

In iFixit’s fluorescent powder test, the Duo collected less visible dust than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. However, some particles reached the hinge, causing a crunching sound during operation.

The lower dust accumulation is encouraging, but the hinge remains vulnerable to debris. iFixit clarified that this was not a formal IP certification test, and the findings do not establish that dust caused the reported display failures.

Inner display repair costs Rs 1,49,900

Apple lists the estimated out-of-warranty inner display repair cost in India at Rs 1,49,900, with the final charge subject to inspection.

The newly purchased devices carry Apple’s one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. Eligible display failures can qualify for a free repair or replacement following assessment. Accidental damage is excluded, so a cracked screen does not automatically qualify. According to iFixit, Apple has already offered replacement units to some affected owners.

Should buyers be concerned?

Reports of displays failing shortly after purchase warrant attention, particularly given the repair cost. However, the available evidence does not establish a widespread defect. The Duo’s lower dust accumulation compared with the Fold8 is a positive finding, while warranty coverage provides support for eligible manufacturing faults.

Early hardware issues have occurred with first-generation foldables before. Samsung delayed the original Galaxy Fold’s launch in 2019 following display problems and subsequently strengthened its protection. That provides context, although it does not establish that the Duo’s reported failures share the same cause.

Our experience

We have been using the iPhone Duo for close to two weeks, including extensive daily use and charging, while reviewing it for The Economic Times Digital. So far, our review unit has not shown any unusual display or hinge issues. We also checked with industry colleagues using the device, who have not reported similar problems. These experiences offer some reassurance, but represent a limited sample.

Our main feedback for potential buyers will be to look out for software optimisation as of now. As we pointed out in our review that’s what a larger base of audience expects from an Apple device.

That being said, as we noted in our review, first-generation devices can require further optimisation, while longer-term, real-world use helps establish their reliability. Buyers awaiting January deliveries may have a clearer picture by then, as more users spend time with the Duo.
