iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus will come to India on Oct 7 at Rs 60,000

SAN FRANCISCO: As is customary with new Apple products, these too were veiled in a cloud of secrecy. But they’re not immune to leaks despite the best measures the company may take. The leaks told us almost everything we needed to know, much before the actual event.

Like before, the iPhone 7 will have a 4.7-inch display while the bigger 7 Plus will measure 5.5-inches across. The 3D touch display technology stays and the displays have been upgraded to display a wider colour gamut. Water and dust resistance is a new feature. IP67 rating on both phones means that you no longer need to be worried about the odd splash.

Looking around the device, you’ll notice the new, more discreet antenna lines, the missing headphone jack and the larger camera modules. Lightning delivers digital audio and promises better quality. The ear pods in the box will connect with Lightning. Also included is a Lightning to 3.5mm audio adapter so that people can still use older earphones. A new accessory, available separately, is the AirPods - wireless earphones that come with their own charging case.



One of the biggest changes has to be the camera. The invite for the event itself held the biggest hint, when it showed colourful bokeh, intentionally blurry areas of an image, like the kind a high-end camera would capture. Both iPhone models now get optical image stabilisation, wider apertures and upgraded front cameras. The 7 Plus gets dual 12MP cameras - the two lenses have different focal lengths allowing you to zoom in without losing image quality. Another feature that lets you separate foreground and background with depth of field effects is coming soon via software update.




ThThis is the first time that the iPhone has had a similar design for three years running. e iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were first showcased in September 2014, the ‘S’ updates came a year later and now the 7 sticks to the same basic design. Obviously, there are other upgrades besides the shape of the phone. The ‘S’ phones offered bucket-loads of performance and the 7 is keeping up that trend – think of it like a sort of place-holder – till the iPhone 8 comes around. The iPhone 8 which have something spectacular. Something that 2016 wasn’t quite ready for!



In terms of internals, the new devices have the new Apple A10 Fusion chip (a 64-bit, quad core), increased RAM and faster GPU. From Apple’s testing, they claim that the iPhone 7 is 40% faster than the A9 in the iPhone 6S and twice as fast as the A8. Graphics performance is 50% faster than the A9 sand three times as fast as the A8 processor.



Both phones will be available in 32GB, 128GB and for the first time in an iPhone, a 256GB variant. The 32GB will likely be the more popular variant. There’s also two new colours – a glossy, Jet Black and a matte black simply called black. This brings the total number of colours up to 5. Prices have been announced as starting at Rs 60,000. They will be available in India starting October 7, 2016.
