Apple launches a new iPhone every year, but upgrading becomes a much harder sell when the phone already in your pocket cost nearly Rs 1.5 lakh just 12 months ago. That is precisely the question facing iPhone 17 Pro Max owners after Apple unveiled the brand-new iPhone 18 Pro Max at its “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, with the latest hardware. iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Display

The screen size remains familiar, and the triple-camera formula survives, but underneath, Apple has made some potentially meaningful changes, including a 2nm A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture main camera, C2 modem, longer claimed battery life and an updated Dynamic Island. The iPhone 18 Pro Max also gets a 6.9-inch display. The bigger change is around the Dynamic Island. Apple has updated it so that it can display three Live Activities simultaneously. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion support up to 120Hz and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Camera: Variable aperture arrives

Photography could be one of the more significant generational upgrades in the latest iPhone 18 Pro Max. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it comes with a triple 48-megapixel setup, but the 48-megapixel Fusion primary camera now gets variable aperture. It is joined by a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, while selfies are handled by an 18-megapixel autofocus front camera. The iPhone 17 Pro Max features three 48-megapixel Fusion cameras covering Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto duties.

A20 Pro vs A19 Pro: The biggest change is inside

The new model steps up to the A20 Pro, manufactured on a 2nm process. The A20 Pro has a six-core CPU paired with a seven-core GPU. Apple has also redesigned the chip architecture with greater emphasis on AI processing. The iPhone 18 Pro series also introduces Apple's new in-house C2 modem, replacing the previous-generation connectivity solution. Other upgrades include iOS 27 and an updated vapour-chamber thermal-management system. The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs on Apple's A19 Pro chip, with a six-core CPU and six-core GPU.

Battery: Eight more hours of claimed video playback

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rated by Apple India for up to 37 hours of video playback. The iPhone 18 Pro Max takes that figure to up to 43 hours in India, giving it six additional hours of video playback over its predecessor. Apple says the new Pro Max combines a larger battery with improved silicon efficiency to deliver its biggest battery-life increase yet.

New colours replace Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue

For 2026, Apple has changed the palette. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is available in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy. Burgundy is the new addition to the Pro lineup. The iPhone 17 Pro Max was launched in Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver.

Storage options remain the same

The iPhone 18 Pro Max continues with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options. Apple India's Store lists the following prices for the iPhone 18 Pro Max:

256GB: Rs 1,79,900

512GB: Rs 2,04,900

1TB: Rs 2,54,900

2TB: Rs 3,29,900

The iPhone 17 Pro Max started at Rs 1,49,900 for 256GB in India, making the new iPhone 18 Pro Max Rs 30,000 more expensive at the entry level.

Is iPhone 18 Pro Max really a big upgrade?

On the surface, the iPhone 18 Pro Max retains the familiar 6.9-inch display and triple-camera setup. But Apple has made substantial changes underneath, including the A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, redesigned Dynamic Island, C2 modem and a larger battery. The biggest catch for Indian buyers is the price. The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs Rs 30,000 more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max did at launch. For existing 17 Pro Max users, the decision will therefore come down to whether the improved camera, six-hour battery gain, A20 Pro performance and other upgrades justify the significantly higher price.
