iOS 13 review: iPhone gets more productive, fun

iOS now boasts of 'Dark Mode', Apple sign-in, faster face unlock.

Dark Mode is a new dark colour scheme that delivers a great viewing experience especially in low-light conditions, is available to third-party app developers, and can be scheduled to turn on automatically at sunset or at a certain time.

The iOS 13 unlocks the Apple device with Face ID 30 per cent faster, reduces app download sizes by upto 50 per cent, launches apps twice as fast.

In iOS 13, most photo editing tools are now available for video editing, making it possible to rotate, crop or apply filters right within the Photos app.

Catalina is the next version of the macOS. The biggest change for macOS 10.15 is the addition of iPad app support. Earlier codenamed 'Marzipan', the project is now called 'Catalyst'. It’s a new way for developers to port their iPad apps over to the Mac. Developers will be able to use Xcode to target their iPad apps at macOS Catalina.

Replacing the iTunes app, Apple is introducing new Apple Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV apps in macOS Catalina. This new 10.15 update comes a year after Apple unveiled macOS 10.14 Mojave with a new dark mode, Apple News, and a redesigned App Store

Introducing Cycle Tracking, Noise app, activity trends and App Store right on the wrist. The new Cycle Tracking app gives women the ability to log important information related to their menstrual cycles and see predicted timing for their next period and fertile window using the convenience of Apple Watch. The new Cycle Tracking feature is also available in the Health app on iPhone with iOS 13. For the first time, watchOS 6 brings the App Store directly to Apple Watch. WatchOS 6 introduces dynamic new watch faces and customization options offering more personalization and access to favorite apps, contacts and information.

The new Mac Pro looks a lot like the original version of the Mac Pro. The new machine has casing that looks like a cheese grater that can be lifted off to swap out components including storage drives, memory chips and the graphics processor. It comes with a 28-core Intel Corp. Xeon chip, one of the fastest processors on the market. The computer is powerful enough to run three streams of raw 8K video. It starts at $5,999 and comes out in the fall. A new display was announced too, starting at $4,999.

The iPad will now run an all-new operating system, called the iPadOS. One of the biggest changes to the iPadOS compared to iOS is the inclusion of widgets on the home screen. You will need to swipe to the left to open a list of app widgets. On iPadOS, these are always visible alongside the grid of apps. iPad owners will be able to cram in a few more apps on each panel of the home screen. Thanks to Split View, you can now work with multiple files and documents from the same app by loading mutiiple screens. iPadOS also includes App Exposé – a quick preview of just the open windows for any one app with a simple tap, so you can quickly cycle through all of the Microsoft Word documents you have open, without having to trawl through Spotify, Safari, Mail, Messages, or anything else that might be running.
