Microsoft's decision to offer voluntary buyout packages to around 60,000 employees has sparked concerns about job security across the technology sector. Tech veteran Maureen Wiley has warned that workers could be entering what she calls the “Involuntary Entrepreneur Era”, where building an independent source of income may become a necessity rather than a choice. The latest offer follows Microsoft's earlier voluntary retirement programme and July job cuts. As the company increases its artificial intelligence spending, employees are questioning what these workforce changes could mean for their careers.

Why is a tech veteran warning IT workers?

In a social media post, Maureen Wiley highlighted the pattern of voluntary exits and layoffs at Microsoft. She noted that the company had introduced its first voluntary retirement packages six months earlier for a limited group of older US employees. Eligibility depended on employees' age and years of service adding up to 70, and more than 30% of eligible workers reportedly accepted the offer.

Microsoft subsequently announced 4,800 job cuts in July. Wiley said the latest buyout offers cover employees in the US, UK, Canada and India, with no age requirement and eligibility extending up to vice president level.

She added that employees have until early December to decide, with participation varying across teams. Wiley urged recipients to consult an employment attorney and consider what might happen to their roles if they decline.

What does the internet say about Microsoft's buyouts?

Wiley's warning prompted discussions about job security and independent income. One user described the situation as a “no hire, rolling fire economy”, arguing that workers may have little choice but to adapt.

Another commenter noted that severance packages could sometimes be negotiated, depending on individual circumstances and the risks involved. A third stressed that learning to build independent income could become an essential skill over the next five to ten years.

What is Microsoft's voluntary exit offer?

According to the Associated Press, Microsoft has offered voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees, representing around 27% of its global workforce. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the programme in a company blog post.

Microsoft had approximately 223,000 full-time employees at the end of June. The latest offer follows an earlier plan to provide buyouts to around 8,750 US workers, or 7% of its US workforce, and July's announcement of 4,800 job cuts. The changes come as Microsoft spends heavily on artificial intelligence infrastructure while managing workforce costs.
