What makes a founder stand out from the herd? While dissecting the traits that founders possess, Bain & Company partner Chris Zook spoke of how he saw Mohan Singh Oberoi, the founder of The Oberoi Group, as the prime example of a founder with frontline obsession. Zook explained how such founders know and love the details of the business and have amazing intellectual curiosity.

Zook remembered being told how Oberoi would be physically present to check if everything was in place during the opening of a property. “He would be there well after midnight, well into his 90s, still inspecting the rooms, looking at the length of the bellmen’s trousers, etc. That intellectual curiosity is what drives innovation and excellence,” said Zook.
