Intel adds a new member to the Comet Lake family; announces affordable processor chip i9-10850K

Intel has announced a new addition to its Comet Lake family, the i9-10850K. The new processor is a relatively more affordable variant of the company’s flagship 10-cre i9-10900K processor, and is clocked at 100MHz slower than the 10900K. The price difference is marginal. The i9-10850K is expected to be $35 cheaper than the $488 i9-10900K.

The architecture and configuration of the new chip is similar to that of the flagship. It has the same 10-core setup as the 10900K, 125 Watt, and thermal velocity boost functions. It is essentially the 10900K that works at a slightly lower clock speed.

Intel said that “the i9-10850K is based on immediate feedback we’ve received from customers, including to further expand options and different price points.” Some analysts reckon that Intel is facing many challenges with chips that can’t reach the 10900K’s clock speed, and is therefore, selling those as the slower, cheaper 10850K.


Intel recently said that its plans to fabricate 7nm chips have been pushed back by six months, and that production could be delayed until 2022 because of a “defect mode” in the process. Till then, the company will have to make do with 10 nm processes, which has also had its share of delays with production.
