Inside Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat

For millions of Shah Rukh Khan fans, Mannat is more than just a celebrity home. The sea-facing bungalow in Mumbai's Bandra has become a landmark, with thousands of people gathering outside its gates every year on the actor's birthday and Eid in the hope of catching a glimpse of the superstar. But behind its famous gates lies a home that reflects the personalities, interests and design choices of the Khan family.

As Shah Rukh celebrates his 61st birthday on November 2, let's revisit Mannat. This property has a story of its own, from its heritage architecture to the interiors designed by his wife, Gauri Khan.

How Shah Rukh Khan bought his dream home

According to Architectural Digest, the property was originally known as Villa Vienna and dates back to 1914. Shah Rukh reportedly first noticed the bungalow in 1997 while shooting the song Chaand Taare for his film Yes Boss. He was so impressed by the property that he told his crew he would own it one day.

That dream became reality in 2001, when the actor purchased the sea-facing bungalow for Rs 18 crore from businessman Nariman Dubash and initially named it Jannat before deciding it should be called Mannat.

As per NDTV, Shah Rukh had once spoken about the financial effort that went into purchasing the property. "With lots and lots of pain. Borrowing money and doing lots of ads. Lots of weddings and shows, inane ones, most of them," he said while recalling how he managed to buy the house.

According to reports, the property is now valued at around Rs 300 crore.

Gauri Khan turned Mannat into a family home

While buying Mannat was a major achievement, furnishing the property presented another challenge. Shah Rukh and Gauri could not afford to hire an interior designer after purchasing the bungalow, so Gauri took responsibility for designing their home.

According to Times of India, Shah Rukh had revealed, "We had to rebuild it since it was dilapidated, and then we struggled to furnish it. We couldn't afford the fees of a designer we consulted, so I suggested that Gauri take charge as the designer of the house."

Designing the house eventually became Gauri’s professional career in interior design. In her 2023 book, My Life in Design, she shared photos and details of Mannat for a rare peek inside.

In an interview with Vogue India, Gauri explained that her biggest priority was to make sure that every family member had a personal space without making the house look disconnected.

Inside Mannat: SRK's library, private theatre and family spaces

One of the most important spaces in Mannat is SRK’s library-cum-study. Gauri said the actor spends most of his time there when he is not busy shooting. The room features wooden bookshelves, warm lighting and an old-school atmosphere that has been designed for reading, writing and work discussions.

The mansion also has a private screening room with seating for 42 people. Its interiors feature burgundy leather recliners and vintage Hindi film posters, including Sholay, Mughal-E-Azam and Ram Aur Shyam.

Apart from this, Aryan has an area where he can spend time with friends, watch films and play games, while AbRam has a section for his toys. Suhana also has a separate space in the house that has been designed around her personality.

The bungalow's interiors have artworks by several big Indian artists like Subodh Gupta and Jogen Chowdhury, along with a framed paintbrush that was gifted by the late artist MF Husain.

Why Mannat is undergoing expansion

Mannat is also undergoing changes beyond its interiors. The original heritage structure, which dates back to 1914, is a Grade III heritage building, according to Architectural Digest. The restrictions demand that its original facade be preserved, with new construction is being done behind it.

The property is about 27,000 sq ft and six storeys high and is being expanded by adding extra storeys to the rear.
