Inside Mithun Chakraborty’s 1.5-acre Mumbai farmhouse: 41-year-old property has separate family cottages, 22 pets, a private gym and film studio

Legendary Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty owns a sprawling estate in Mumbai's Madh Island. Far from a conventional celebrity house, the property functions more like a private family retreat. His son, Namashi Chakraborty, recently gave a glimpse into the grand residence and revealed several interesting details about the property.

Mithun Chakraborty’s 1.5-acre Madh Island property

Spread across nearly 1.5 acres, or around 65,000 sq ft, Mithun Chakraborty’s Madh Island bungalow is much larger than a typical Mumbai home. The expansive property has plenty of greenery, multiple cottages and dedicated spaces for the family, making it more like a private estate than a conventional bungalow.

According to Namashi's tour in Pinkvilla, Mithun and his wife bought the property in 1985, a few months after the birth of their eldest son, Mimoh Chakraborty. The family later moved to Ooty, where they lived until 2007. After returning to Mumbai, they began using the Madh Island property as their full-time family home. Until then, it had largely served as a holiday residence.

The property has also remained connected to Mithun’s love for gardening. During the house tour, Namashi revealed that his father enjoys spending time among the plants and often keeps himself occupied with gardening.

Separate cottages for family members

One of the most unusual aspects of the estate is its layout. Rather than having the entire family live together under one roof, the property has several separate cottages, each serving a different purpose.

Namashi explained that both his father and grandfather believed that children should have their own personal space. As a result, different family members have access to separate cottages on the property.

The estate also has dedicated spaces for specific needs. One cottage has been converted into a fully equipped gym, while another is used for guests. Mithun and his wife have a separate cottage for when they are in Mumbai. There is also an office where the family holds film-related meetings and script discussions.

Namashi revealed that his father spends most of his time in Kolkata, but the Mumbai property continues to be an important family space.

The bungalow has also hosted several Bollywood gatherings over the years. Its courtyard has reportedly been used for Diwali celebrations, with veteran actors including Dharmendra and Jeetendra among the guests who have attended the festivities.

From a yellow Beetle to a sprawling estate: Mithun's journey

The house tour also touched upon Mithun’s early years in Mumbai, long before he became one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars.

Namashi pointed to a yellow Volkswagen Beetle and described it as his father’s first home in Mumbai. He said Mithun did not have a house when he arrived in the city and spent around 15 days living in the car.

The vintage vehicle is no longer in a condition to be driven, but according to Namashi, Mithun continues to spend money on maintaining it. The story offers a glimpse into how dramatically the actor’s circumstances changed over the decades.

The estate is also home to a large number of animals. According to the house tour, the family currently has 22 dogs, while an older 2014 Times of India report had also highlighted Mithun’s fondness for animals and his need for a large property because of his pets.

Awards, film studio and Mithun’s career memories

Mithun’s home office is another notable part of the property. It doubles as a display of his decades-long career, with walls covered in awards, photographs, fan-made paintings and sketches.

The space also features pictures of Mithun with several well-known personalities, including Kannada cinema legend Rajkumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bal Thackeray. Photographs related to his major career milestones, including the moment he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, are also displayed.

The office further features memories of the actor’s three National Awards, offering visitors a look at the milestones from his long career.

Madh Island farmhouse boasts in-house studio

Another section of the property has now taken on a more professional purpose. A space known as Myrnd Bungalow has been converted into a studio and is available for film shoots and weddings. According to the house tour, the studio is located just a couple of minutes from the family residence.

The property also has a dedicated room where Mithun and his sons conduct film narrations and discuss projects.

Despite the scale of the estate, family life inside the bungalow appears to remain fairly simple. When Namashi was asked what the family usually discusses at the dinner table, he said it was mostly food rather than films. He also described his father as a good cook and praised his chicken biryani.

The Madh Island property therefore brings together several sides of Mithun Chakraborty’s life, his family, love for animals and gardening, career memorabilia and his sons’ filmmaking interests.

According to a 2014 TOI report, before moving to Ooty in the 1990s and living there for nearly a decade, Mithun Chakraborty had two homes in Mumbai -- one in Bandra and another bungalow in Madh Island. The report said Mithun, who was living with his wife, three sons and daughter, preferred having a bungalow because of his large family and his love for dogs. At the time, he was said to have around six to 10 dogs.

The report also mentioned that Mithun kept several dogs and unusual birds at his Madh Island property, where the animals were given dedicated care and facilities. The dogs were kept tied during the day but were allowed to roam around the property at night.

What began as a holiday home bought in 1985 has evolved into a sprawling family estate that continues to hold memories from different stages of the actor’s life.
