Inside ‘Iron Man’ star Robert Downey Jr’s 141-year-old home: Windmill cottage has giant insect statue in garden, wraparound fireplace, bubblegum bathroom and opulent swimming pool

Where does the Iron Man live in real life? It’s in a nearly 150-year-old home somewhere in the picturesque and serene town of East Hampton, New York. In 2017, actor Robert Downey Jr gave Architectural Digest a view of his magnificent windmill cottage. The house was created in 1885.

It was initially a playhouse with unobstructed views of the church spire across from it, but after Robert and his wife, Susan, bought the house in 2017 for an estimated $11.9 million, Joe Nahem and the Fox-Nahem Associates team gave it a makeover.

Cosy Nook

The house is a work of art but is also very “cozy”, explained the Sherlock Holmes star. In the first glimpse of the dimly lit drawing room in the video, we can see elegant wooden walls, which give off a vintage but sturdy feel. His wife, Susan, shared some glimpses of really quirky art displayed on the walls of the room. It features a huge wraparound fireplace created by a ceramic artist. Susan sat down on a huge sofa, filled with fluffy striped cushions, and revealed how she often came there to "meditate". The floors are also made of sturdy wood. The front door garden features a giant praying mantis statue.

A Vision In White

The Downeys gave AD a glimpse at one of the bedrooms – the entire room is coloured a tranquil white, and the bed, ivory-hued with matching pillows, also fit right in. Adjacent to the bedroom, there is a small room which sports a huge portrait of wildly crashing waves, golden sofas, and pristine wooden floors.

A Regal Dining Space

The walls of the dining room are bathed in shades of deep gold, which perfectly complement the deep brown of the wooden floors. There is also ebony-coloured furniture, which looks exquisite.

A Cutesy Bathroom

The bathroom, vibrant and colourful, appeared like something right out of an anime. Dipped in shades of pink, the walls appeared to resemble bubblegum. The floor and one side of the wall were covered in wallpaper decorated with black, purple, and white bubbles.

A Glamorous Poolside Pavilion

The new freestanding pavilion beside the pool has an eating space, bar, television, and outdoor living room. Instead of using the guesthouse as a swimming cabana as it had in the previous plan according to Architectural Digest, interior designer Joe Nahem worked with Alveary Architecture to design a freestanding poolside pavilion that included an outdoor living room and bar, a television nearly as big as the screens at the neighbourhood multiplex, and a dining area centred around a mosaic-topped table by Kelly Behun Studio. The pavilion has wooden floors, is encircled by flora, and has an opulent swimming pool with a marble bank next to it. The family can unwind on white couches with aquamarine pillows at the pavilion.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, Robert Downey Jr’s networth is a whopping $300 million.
