Lahari Bai is R Madhavan's inspiration
Taking to his Instagram handle today (April 27), Madhavan shared an inspiring story about Lahari Bai, a tribal woman from Madhya Pradesh who has quietly made a significant impact in the field of agriculture. Calling her a true hero, the actor shared her contribution towards preserving traditional millet varieties that were slowly disappearing.According to Madhavan’s post, Lahari Bai began her journey at a young age when she noticed that indigenous millet crops were being replaced by modern hybrid seeds. While most people were moving towards high-yield farming, she chose a different path. She started travelling from village to village, collecting whatever traditional seeds people still had. Over time, her efforts helped save more than 150 rare millet varieties that were on the verge of extinction.
Instead of keeping these seeds for herself, Lahari Bai created a ‘Beej Bank’, a seed bank aimed at sharing. She distributes these seeds to farmers free of cost, encouraging them to grow crops that are not only nutritious but also climate-resilient. Millets are known to survive in harsh conditions and require less water, making them crucial for future food security.
