Indian filmmakers 'push dumbness': Ram Gopal Varma makes shocking comparison to Hollywood as he reviews 'Mission: Impossible'

Ram Gopal Varma has sparked a debate in the Indian film industry after expressing his thoughts on Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14 and released in India on May 17, received a five-minute standing ovation at its premiere. It has since drawn admiration from global audiences, with Varma joining the chorus in praise.

Calling the eighth instalment of the franchise “MindFuckkaBlowing,” Varma stated on social media that it was the best in the Mission: Impossible series. He used the occasion to contrast what he sees as a glaring difference in filmmaking approaches between Hollywood and Indian cinema.

‘We Assume the Audience to Be Dumb’

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Varma highlighted a mindset difference. He wrote, “The difference between them and us is they assume the audience to be intelligent and push their intelligence further up, by making films like #MissionImpossibleTheFinalReckoning. On the contrary, we assume the audience to be dumb and we push their dumbness further down in the hope of even reaching the dumbest of the audience by making films like ____________.”


Although he didn’t name a specific Indian film in the blank space, social media users quickly filled it in with their own suggestions — some even pointing toward Varma’s own projects like RGV Ki Aag and Sarkar 3. This led to a mix of criticism and support for the filmmaker online.

Social Media Reacts to Varma's Statement

While some netizens defended the sentiment behind Varma’s statement, calling it “perfectly put,” others questioned the credibility of the director to pass such judgment, given the reception of some of his own past work. One user pointed out that Hollywood also produces many subpar films annually, mentioning actors like Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, and argued that the only difference lies in budget and scale.

Despite the criticism, others acknowledged the point he was trying to make. One user remarked that Indian films often rely heavily on the star power of actors, whereas Hollywood films, even with big stars, tend to focus on ideas that challenge audiences.

Varma’s Past Reflections and Future Plans

This is not the first time Ram Gopal Varma has publicly reflected on the direction of his career. In a previously shared note, he admitted regret over not maintaining the standards he set with his film Satya. He stated that he had failed to use it as a benchmark for his future projects.

To redeem what he described as his “cinema sins,” Varma announced a new film titled Syndicate earlier this year. He described the upcoming movie as a chilling exploration of a dangerous criminal organization, adding that it would be terrifying not due to supernatural elements, but because of its portrayal of dark truths about human nature and societal collapse. More details about the project are yet to be revealed.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning features Tom Cruise alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett.
