What if one of nature’s busiest builders could help communities prepare for floods while creating new homes for wildlife? That is what researchers have been observing in North Yorkshire, where a pair of beavers has spent five years transforming a forest stream into a wetter, more diverse landscape. The findings from a long-running trial in Cropton Forest suggest that the animals are doing far more than simply building dams. Their activity has altered water flows, created new wetland habitats and coincided with increases in several groups of wildlife.

Two beavers, six dams and a changing landscape

In April 2019, two Eurasian beavers were released into a 10-hectare enclosure in Cropton Forest as part of a scientific trial led by Forestry England and licensed by Natural England. The site had already been equipped with natural flood-management structures designed to slow water flowing towards communities downstream.

Over the following five years, the beavers constructed six dams, including one described by researchers as the largest in England. Their dams stored water and slowed its movement through the landscape, working alongside existing flood-management structures. The scientific study, published in Ecohydrology, found a 46.6% reduction in median peak flows compared with an upstream gauge. Researchers also recorded a substantial increase in baseflow, meaning more water remained available during drier conditions. Professor Mark Smith of the University of Leeds, the study’s lead author, said: “The site was transformed by the beavers in ways we never imagined.”

From flood control to a wildlife hotspot

The biggest surprise may be what happened beyond the water. As the beavers created ponds and wetter areas, aquatic plant diversity increased. Researchers also recorded changes involving amphibians, mammals, fish, dragonflies and damselflies. Bat activity increased at locations and times that corresponded with beaver activity, while camera footage showed greater otter activity during the trial.

The transformation was not simply about creating more water. Beaver dams produced a patchwork of ponds, wetlands and flowing channels, creating different habitats for different species. Forestry England ecologist Cath Bashford described the result as “a complex wetland habitat connecting the river with the floodplain”, helping retain water during dry periods and slow it during floods.

Why beavers are attracting attention

Beavers disappeared from Britain centuries ago, largely because of hunting. Their return has increasingly attracted interest from conservationists because the animals modify landscapes without humans having to design every individual intervention. The Guardian recently highlighted their potential role in natural flood management, quoting Jamie Marsh of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, who said: “Beavers do it for free.” However, the report also stressed that beavers cannot solve flooding on their own. Restoring wetlands, improving soil health and reconnecting rivers with floodplains remain important parts of a wider strategy.

That caution is important. The Yorkshire study found that beaver dams themselves can change, breach and evolve, while some human-built flood-management structures deteriorated. Researchers found that the beavers’ additional water-storage capacity helped compensate for that loss.

A bigger experiment is now taking shape

The Cropton trial has already moved beyond its original five-year period. Natural England has extended the licence until 2029, allowing researchers to continue monitoring the animals and their environmental effects. Forestry England is also exploring the possibility of a licensed beaver reintroduction in the wider Yorkshire Derwent catchment. The Yorkshire experiment therefore offers a glimpse of what happens when an ecosystem engineer is allowed to reshape part of a landscape.

The lesson is not that beavers can replace conventional flood defences. Instead, the research suggests that, when carefully managed, their natural behaviour can become part of a broader approach to restoring wetlands, retaining water and creating habitats. Sometimes, the most effective environmental engineers may already have four paws, large teeth and a talent for building dams.
