Anne Hathaway is on a roll. The actress had a slate of film releases this year, including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and David Frankel’s The Devil Wears Prada 2. Now, she is awaiting the October 2 premiere of Verity, also starring Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. For the unversed, Hathaway resides in a 1906 California country home with husband-jewellery designer Adam Shulman, which once belonged to acclaimed French designer Yves Saint Laurent. She purchased the 3500 sq ft property for 3.6 million dollars in 2014 and transformed it into a Swiss chalet–style residence.

The country estate, designed by Pamela Shamshiri and her team, is tucked away on a hillside in Mount Washington, a historic residential neighbourhood in Los Angeles, offering picturesque green views.

Anne Hathaway’s living and dining room

The living room boasts rustic features comprising a stone-carved fireplace, alpine wood flooring, and a furry rug sprawled across the space, as per Architectural Digest. Hathaway’s love for sophisticated but colour-blocked hues resulted in the designer using unexpected shades like pale green, duck egg blue and cherry red in its upholstery.


Heavily-textured layers, rich fabrics and polished metals reflect light against the deep timber backdrops. The dining room is heavily wrapped in rich, floor-to-ceiling timber cladding. A cutout wooden staircase offers a distinct European lodge feel. A fringed fabric pendant light over a mid-century extendable table worked wonders with the deep black night-sky art pieces flanking the back wall.

Music room and kitchen

There’s a distinct music room, originally designed as a dance hall, crowned with an early–20th-century disco ball from a Turkish spa. The space consists of a piano, a shiny Yves Klein Monogold table, and a cosy seating arrangement for guests.

Meanwhile, the kitchen is bathed in shades of robin’s-egg blue and pale green, opening directly to the dreamy breakfast room, featuring scenic wallpaper and modern furniture.

Salient features of bedroom

As per The English Home, the elegant kitchen island has become a space for the family to gather around, prep food, and invite friends to have a good time. Woodwork and heavy timber beams ground the room, but bright, playful colour pops offer a striking contrast.

As for the living room, it has a cottagecore feel featuring soft browns blending with soft, dusty pink vertical wall panelling. A rich, mid-century wooden bed frame coupled with a textured leather bedside chest pairs beautifully with crisp white linens, embroidered floral pillows, and punchy leopard-print accents
